My comments on tutoring Florida Writes : For the past 5 years I have worked with 4th grade students in school classrooms as well as tutored for FCAT Writes test. I have many tips and techniques to use when tutoring a student in writing.

I absolutely love teaching and working with children. Children learn in unique and individual ways and sometimes struggle in school work because they learn at a different pace than the class as a whole. Individual and small group instruction greatly benefits these children in many ways. They have a chance to ask questions, to deal with specific areas of difficulty and to have better self-esteem when they discover they can learn and master the challenges of reading, writing, and math. Nothing is more fulfilling as a teacher than to see a happy face on a child who has discovered the joy of learning.
As an English major in Education at the University of Alabama, I took many specialized courses in writing and reading. I learned many techniques for teaching creative writing and reading comprehension skills. For the past five years I have tutored students in FCAT writes technique ... read more

More About This Tutor...

For five years I taught swimming lessons. While swimming isnotan academic subject, this experience taught me the essentials of teaching. I worked with a large range of ages, from six months to sixty years. While in college I was a tutor/editor in the writing center all three years. Upon graduation I took two part time jobs tutoring English at elementary and secondary levels, at Knowledge Points of Tampa Bay and Lindamood- Bell learning processes of South Tampa.
I rely heavily on Socratic questioning, to strengthen the students own thinking; my goal is for him/her to not need me. I use symbol and concept imagery language to ensure the student is not simply repeating, but seeing and understanding. Learning, especially at the lower levels, need not be boring, and I enjoy teaching through games, and in counter culture environments such as reading on bean bags or under a tree. I am flex ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love kids and I'm definitely looking forward to the time when I will have some of my own. I firmly believe in the value of education and hope to help convey that to our youth. I am an extremely understanding, patient, positive, and honest person. I am always willing to help someone in need, especially children, and I would love to have the opportunity to help educate our next generation. I know that for many children, one-on-one tutoring sessions can be more constructive than a classroom full of noisy distractions. Any child can become as successful as they want with help and encouragement in the right areas. I am determined to provide that help and encouragement to our students.
I have attended private schools for my entire educational career except for the last few months of high school. I was raised to believe that education is one of the most important things one can a ... read more

I am a strong believer than learning should be fun. I enjoy working with children and work to serve as a mentor and role-model for them. I try to discover how the student learns the best and tailor tutoring sessions to the their needs. I strive to make the session fun by giving the student information in ways they are familiar with or can understand, i.e., using sports, music or other interests as examples. The student's success is the most important thing.

A Little Bit About Me...

Very hands on type of person. I am the type of person that needs visual reminders to get my work done. I know that everyone learns in different capacities so I try to incorporate that into my teaching style. I work on identifying the students learning style and then we go from there.
I am currently working at Challenger 7 Elementary School as the only Guidance Counselor. I have created a study group club with students that need study skills, organizational skills or assistance getting their work done! I have been employed as a substitute teacher and mental health counselor in the past. I enjoy working with students because a lot of their stress is due to frustration of not knowing a concept. If you work with the students on their frustration you begin to see improvement in their grades!

During my tenure as a Title 1 Reading Instructor I served students with reading difficulties. I was instrumental in developing curriculum which aligned with the Massachusetts Frameworks. In addition to my Mater's Degree, I kept my teaching practice current by enrolling in the prestigious New Hampshire Writing Program and in the LINKS Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum Program. Since my retirement in 2006, I have served as a tutor in the Middlesex Community College Writing and Reading Center.
I am a great believer in Learning Styles instruction and try to approach each student with the understanding that students learn in so many different ways there is no "right" approach to instruction. I try to maintain an "approachable" manner because I know that stress interferes with learning. I also have worked with a very diverse student body so I am very comfortable instructing stud ... read more

I approach each day with enthusiasm because I believe it's contagious. My greatest strength lies in the fact that I am a good communicator and I am always looking to develop myself as an instructor. In the first few weeks, whether it's with one student or 30 students I like to develop a partnership or team with them. An example of this is when we discuss, and agree upon the classroom rules. It gives the student a sense of responsibility and accountability. Depending on the age group I think it's important to establish and develop organizational skills so that they can be set up for success.
I have been teaching for 5 years in a private school. It was a great introduction for me in so many ways. Not only did I experience teaching large classrooms but also smaller ones. I also learned a great deal from my colleagues and I'm always looking to improve myself. I taught Math, Scienc ... read more

I subscribe to a comprehensive overview initially to provide a basic structural outline of course content and criteria for learning goals. Students can then "fill in" this overview outline as new content is introduced, with open discussion and query to gain additional insights. Daily affirmation of progress with focused discussion addressing areas of needing improvement to keep engaged with consistent monitoring. Assessments should be brief with subsequent feedback soon after testing. Keeping within the overview outline while working each course section will serve to assist in learning comprehension and retention while developing a long term knowledge of the overall course curriculum.

I am proficient in finding new and different ways of presenting and explaining information in a way that is customized for the student's particular needs of understanding and comprehension. Each student has a different strength in learning and I enjoy finding what works best for that student and seeing their self-esteem boosted as a result of their success. I am compassionate in working with youth, especially those who need extra guidance and enrichment. Every child needs the kind of support that says “I believe in you! Keep on going! I see your effort!” Encouragement means acknowledging progress—not just rewarding achievement. It's this positive attitude and encouragement that makes the biggest difference in the life of a child.

I have always been a creative thinker. This lead me to have a variety of career choices and intrests. I have a bachelor degree in communications, and will have my Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling in the fall of 2010. I also have been published in the Chicago Tribune in the Women's section on two occasions. I have also honed my writing and presentation skills by being in a Masters program where I am required to write extensively.
I believe that authenticity is the key to relating to people--especically children. Children are drawn to me because they sense my kindness and compassion. Equally important is my belief that evereyone learns differently. There is no right or wrong way to learn. A "slow" learner is not "stupid" or deficient in any way. They just have to be accomodating in an alternative manner. I believe that a teacher must adapt to the child's style of learni ... read more

Here is Some Good Information About Florida Writes Tutoring

The Florida Writing Assessment was implemented in grades 4, 8, and 10 as required by a law passed by the 1990 legislature. Does your student need a tutor? The best way to teach writing is to engage students in the writing process. This recursive process includes planning, writing, revising, and editing. As students become more proficient, the amount of time spent on each step in the process may shorten, and the necessity for teacher involvement should lessen. Florida Writes can be challenging.
