Very hands on.
I am a Coda and native in ASL. Currently I do interpreting in the community, primarily medical. I can not only help with your signing as a whole but also in the subtle nuances that come with the language such as facial expressions and non verbal cues. I am able to assist with Gloss, use of sign space, and ways to expand your vocabulary.

Vocabulary.I think it's important to have a strong grasp of vocabulary. Sentence structure is important as well seeing as sign language had its own sentence structure. In addition I can help to understand deaf culture. It is important to understand where Deaf people get their signs and to learn how others live their lives.

A Little Bit About Me...

After graduating from high school in June 2003, I went on to further my education at Kent State University of Kent, OH. At Kent State, I majored in Special Education: Mild to Moderate Disabilities. Upon completion of my program and graduation from Kent State in December 2007, I received my Bachelor of Science in Education. I graduated with the honor of Magna Cum Laude because of a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.74. As a special education teacher, I have a great deal of experience in working with beginning readers and writers, as well as beginning math. However, I am certified to teach learners in grades K-12. Since graduation, I spent 3 months as a substitute teacher, where I worked primarily with elementary school students. For the past month, I have been tutoring students in Reading, Math, Study Skills and Homework Help.
It is my firm belief that if students have the confidence in ... read more

My approach to tutoring is to try to be as hands-off as possible. By this I mean that I will not "fix" papers, nor will I write directly on a student's paper if it can be helped. I want to help the student in their problem areas by showing them examples of an area (thesis statement, grammar, citations)that needs improvement and then working with them so that they will know how to address the problem in the future. I also find that often tutors do their best work while acting as "sounding-boards" for their students; listening to the student (as each student has different needs)and then offering suggestions and ideas on how to approach difficulties.
I have recently graduated cum laude from Kent State University Stark with a BA in English and dual minors in Writing and History. The courses that I completed required an extensive amount of research and writing, in which I excelled. I al ... read more

I love to teach and have a passion for working with students with disabilities. I believe all children can learn, but many have their own individual learning style. My goal is to modify and accommodate those students, so that they are able to succeed and receive a high quality education. I am extremely patient, organized, and creative. I enjoy trying a variety of approaches until I find what works best for each individual child. I believe as educators we are responsible for setting up our students for success. We should give them many opportunities to learn through their own discoveries, so they can take some ownership over their learning and feel motivation and pride in what they have accomplished.
I am currently pursuing my Master's Degree in special education at Kent State University, and have a Bachelor's degree in Hearing, Speech, and Language Sciences. I have not tutored befo ... read more

As a psychology graduate I have a deep desire to help children both academically and socially. Prior to becoming a psychology major I spent two years studying Early Childhood Education. I have excellent communication skills, and know how to talk with children in order to help them succeed. I worked in a daycare for 4 years. During that time I was both a toddler teacher, and substitute preschool teacher.
Working with children has always been a passion of mine. A Little Bit About Me...

It was in my senior year at UConn that I learned about a program called City Year that enables young people as myself to work within the realm of urban education. As a City Year corps member, I was able to work both inside the classroom and after school with a group of 22 ninth grade boys at Glenville High School in Cleveland. Not only was I able to do in-class tutoring with these adolescents, but I was also able to to mentor them by encouraging them to do the right thing. Being so close in age to my students, I was further able to bridge the communication gap between these boys and their teachers.
I believe that each child learn differently, and as such, I have found the best way to teach is to cater to each child's individual learning style. In working one-on-one with students, I feel as though it is crucial to build a trusting relationship in which the child feels comfortabl ... read more

My undergraduate degree included a minor in Special Education which helped me in future employment where I have worked with children who have a variety of needs. I have found that when working with children patience is required and it is often helpful to include fun projects or incentives whenever possible to help retain information and keep focus on the skills they’re being required to learn. I also attempt teach study skills along with course material for retention and to ensure future achievement with minimal intervention.
After earning my MS in Counseling and Human Services I worked for a private agency where I had years of experience with children who had difficulties in school for any number of reasons. I often helped high school and elementary school aged children with course required materials including writing and math skills along with other behavioral needs. I have foun ... read more

As a bilingual, internationally traveled persona, I have tutored students of all ages. From 1999-2003, I have served as a third grade Teacher's Aide focusing on on reading, memorization and basic math tutoring. Since 1999, I also have tutored middle, high school, and college students in pre-algebra, algebra, geography, computer skills, writing, and grammar. My master's degree has trained me in learning techniques.
In my experience, a person needs to be confident in him/herself in order to succeed. Learning of scholastic material is two fold: personal and academic development. By understanding the manner in which the student comprehends new information, we then can build upon their foundation by removing the frustration and replacing it with confidence that will extend into their personal life as well.

Here is Some Good Information About Sign Language Tutoring

Are you studying sign language as preparation for a profession, to pass a test, to communicate with loved ones or simply for general knowledge? Select a tutor to customize your learning. Some think that sign language preceded spoken language, and just as there are foreign languages, dialects and accents there are also variances in signing. Tutors are waiting to be selected to help with your needs. Parents of deaf children should introduce them to language as early as possible because the earlier a child is exposed to and acquires language skills the better the communication skills will become.
