A Little Bit About Me...

I am passionate about teaching and learning, and I love all people. I am an advocate of task-based learning, multiple intelligences, and the all-around inductive/constructivist approach to learning. I am a firm believer in the idea that all people have the same innate capacity to learn, but that this is manifested in different ways. This is particularly important because I beleive a good teacher should be able to discover the individual and specific ways that a student relates or acquires information best (visually, aurally, kinesthetically etc.) and can then take that information and develop appropriate excercises and teaching materials to help maximize that student's learning experience. I also served as a senior editor to the student publication Soliloquy, in which I selected, edited, and arranged writing pieces in the journal. I was also the dorm paper advisor, charging only a box of Chewy Chips Ohoy cookies for my paper editing skills, answering questions as to why you needed a period there instead of the never ending run-on sentence. I have just finished my first year in the MFA-Fiction program at The University of Montana where I also worked as a Teaching Assistant in the English department. As a Teaching Assistant, I taught Basic Composition to undergraduates. Teaching one section of composition each semester, I was responsible for lesson plans, running hour long class periods, grading student essays, holding student conferences, and attending various teaching workshops with my fellow TAs. As a life-long student, I aspire to a life of teaching. While an undergraduate at St. Olaf College, I developed strong communication and interpersonal skills as a writing center tutor and ESL mentor.
