My goal in studying linguistics is to become a professional ESL teacher. I am very much interested in language development at all levels, but especially in nonnative language development. I am a native speaker of English, but I am also fluent in Spanish as well. I love to teach and learn language. I am a professional student currently enrolled in a master of arts program for applied linguistics at the University of Montana. I will be teaching a course in English for Academic Purposes next year at the university. My specialty concerns the teaching of the four primary skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) to nonnative learners of the English language. As a life-long student, I aspire to a life of teaching. While an undergraduate at St. Olaf College, I developed strong communication and interpersonal skills as a writing center tutor and ESL mentor. After graduating magna cum laude in 2005, I became a volunteer educator in Chicago and taught elementary and middle school math, reading, art and social studies. I believe in a multifaceted approach to the different types of learners, aural, visual, kinesthetic, and reading/writing and aim to incorporate all learning styles in my teaching. I watched my brother struggle through school and learning disabilities all his life, so I tutored him through math and English since 7th grade. I found if you connect with a student and create ways that speak to him, you can foster learning. I helped my brother write flow charts on full-length mirrors to chart plotlines from books.
