Sign Language is one of my top subjects! I am hard of hearing and I have used American Sign Language my whole life. ASL is my second language, used when I attended school and when I hung out with friends. I went to a school that offered ASL as a class and I took three years of ASL, skipping the first year. I was in the American Sign Language honor society and I graduated with the Laurent Clerc medallion. I signed the National anthem at school football games, and at my own graduation with a couple of other students as well. While in the honor society, I was required to go to an event and sign there, I signed a couple of shows at the Florida Aquarium.

I am a very hands on type of teacher/tutor, I will have a white board and marker with me at all meetings. I am avid about 'Voice-off' since it's the best way to learn ASL. I like to do games as well since ASL is very expressive and the best way to learn it is to do it. I don't like textbooks.
I am hard of hearing with about fifteen years of sign language experience. American Sign Language is my second language, and I use it everyday. I can help tutor any level of ASL. Although I learned sign language when I was young, my high school offered ASL and I took the class. I skipped ASL 1 since I am already experienced in the language. My senior year of high school, I was in ASL 4 and we were combined with ASL 1 to help tutor and teach. It was a great experience to help those who wanted to learn the language but also influenced me more to become a teacher, which I am now attending school ... read more

I began my Education later in life so I can appreciate students who struggle in adolesence as I did as well. My first hurdle acomplished was to earn a A.S. in Human services and then I worked as a Substance Abuse Counselor for the next five years. I always enjoyed the "teaching" part of this job so I eventually sought further education. My goal was to incorperate my expertise as a Counselor and work in the puplic school system. I soon became a Spec. Education professional and I worked with students who were labeled emotionally handicapped. I did this for six years and eventullay became certified to teach regular education Math. I presently teach 7th grade Math, however as a former spec. ed. teacher I have also taught other subjects.
As a former Special Education Teacher I incorporate into my lessons applications in many different learning styles. I believe that many of today's ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Graduating from the ITP at USF exposed me to the intricated differences and nuances between English and American Sign Language. More importantly, teaching at Blossom opened my eyes to Deaf culture and the pure passion which drives teachers. Teaching middle school deaf children has been an experience unsurpassed by any other. I have learned the immense patience teaching teaching requires, as well as the utter joy received by the passing of knowledge.

A Little Bit About Me...

I look at each student as an individual with specific learning styles that they respond best to. My goal is to identify the learning style or styles of your student and then apply my creative mind to finding ways to present information. Positive reinforcement has given me the best success with students through the years. I believe there are no stupid questions and assess continually until I know that a concept has been grasped. Celebrations of milestones and victories are a large part of what I do as I believe self-esteem and failure can be the biggest obstacle a student must overcome.
As a graduate of Humboldt State University with a BA and a 2 year post-graduate certificate to teach, I have been led through an array of opportunities over 28 years. I have dealt with special needs children, teens, preschoolers, elementary children and taught any subject placed in front of me. ... read more
