I began as a teacher's assistant in 1994 for 4 years before returning to earn my Bachelor's Degree in Ed. I obtained endorsements in high school math and reading. My teaching experience began at a school for girls who are court ordered to residential treatment for behaviors. Unfortunately, after over 8 years in this position, I was laid off. Since then I have been employed by Sylvan Learning Center, a tutoring facility where we work with student of various ages and abilities. We assist these students with reading, math (both beginning to high school levels), study skills and test prep. I have taught various levels of math - elementary through some college - reading, speech, computer applications, science, history, and English. Recently I retired from teaching Title I classes. Much of my work has been helping lower elementary students improve their reading skills, often in a 1:1 setting. Besides working with young students, I have worked as high as 8th grade. Usually I have assisted with reading, but I have also helped with math, too. Helping young children learn to read has been the most rewarding thing I have done. It is a joy to watch them catch on to new learning. I like working 1:1 or in small groups. It is important build on a student's strengths, linking to what they know, and tying instruction to his or her interests.

I hold the personal belief that, “All children are special and learn differently. Each possesses the right and the ability to learn. It is my responsibility to ensure that all children receive the knowledge and tools necessary to reach their full potential.” I think learning needs to be presented in different ways for children to learn because I do not think there is one “right” way to learn. Since not all people learn the same, I try to make sure that I can think of fun, creative, and unique methods for presenting materials. Teaching is a wonderful experience! My teaching style is laid-back, I'd say. I like having conversations in order to determine how someone learns. I think people learn best when discussing the material and really think it out before they start creating something. Guiding a student down the path of their own learning style is important because they will need those skills in the future when they go off to college or start a career on their own.
