I am currently an intervention specialist for students in grades 5-8, specializing in reading content and reading strategies. Last year, I taught students in the fifth grade, focusing in the scholastic areas of mathematics, reading, language arts, science and social studies.I was assisting students in an inclusion setting with some pull out resource room interventions. A Little Bit About Me...

For a period of five years, I offered tutoring services to students at the University of Chapel Hill, Duke University, and North Carolina State University. My ability comes from experience...I was not entirely prepared for college when I started, and had to work much harder to successfully complete my degrees. I believe that this has given me a great insight into what students really need, especially as schools continue to do a less than perfect job of preparing students for the future.
The goal of my approach is to enable students to have a level of ownership in learning concepts and ideas. Merely teaching the idea is not enough, and that "Oh, I see" moment must occur to embed the idea for long-term growth. I enjoy relating the ideas and facts to real world examples that almost anyone can grasp.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a BA in pol sci from Wright State University with a minor in math. Since then, I have tutored at-risk students in various programs in San Diego. I attended National University and earned a teaching certificate. I worked in a junior college in San Diego as a tutor in math, English, reading, and social studies. I went on to work in the San Diego Unified School district as a teacher's aide and as a substitute teacher. I then accepted a position at the world famous Scripps Research Institute. Since English was not the first language of many of these scientists, it was necessary for me to help edit their papers prior to submission using extensive grammatical skills. I believe in presenting each child with a verbal and visual explanation of each objective. I then believe that each child needs the chance to complete a task with encouragement and success before independent work. Assessment should only be taken AFTER a child has experienced numerous chances for understanding, practice, and mastery. Flexibility is another thing that many students are not allowed in class, and I believe is very important to success. This is permitted in my classes on an as-needed basis. I like to teach by example and give the student the opportunity to learn by doing. I do not do the work for the student, but instead allow him or her to do the work with my support until he or she is capable of doing the work independently. I am patient and thorough with my work. I do not get angry and I do not act strict with students.
