Whenever possible, I use highlighters, colored pencils, hands-on manipulatives, and other items to help students learn. I have been teaching elementary students since 1995 in 1st and 4th grades. I allow students to discover answers by themselves by prompting them with questions. This hands off technique reflects the minimalist philosophy of the writing center I worked for, and I have found it is a far more effective way to help students grasp concepts which will globally make their writing better. Understanding the fundamentals of good writing is the most important tool to becoming a good writer; where merely diagnosing an issue and giving an answer for it leads to much more lazy writing in the future. I use note-cards and mnemonics. I'm also fond of repetition (which will allow the student to obviously retain the information) and often do reviews at the end of a session to further examine what said student is struggling with. So far I have only tutored one student for a year or so. However, I am very knowledgeable in these subjects and hope to make the best of your child's tutoring experience. And despite my inexperience, I am more than capable of tutoring. I also am willing to respect the established rules and wishes that the student's caretakers have placed upon us meeting.
