Experience Summary
As a student, I earned a 3.87 in my major of English Arts, while both working as an employee for the school writing center and as a contributor for the school newspaper. I also did a lot of moonlighting outside of the writing center as a personal tutor for undergrads, high school, and elementary students, all with various experience in English as a language. I have produced over a thousand pages of academic writing during my time at school concerning a wide variety of subjects, which is a reflection of the broad English curriculum for the University at Albany and my minor of sociology. As an employee for the writing center I worked with students in such areas as the pre-writing stage, study habits, reading comprehension, properly citing work, grammar, letters of intent, creative writing, theses, and general academic writing. A good percentage of students I worked with who were serious about becoming better writers (or were forced to the center by their professor) saw such a fast improvement in their writing that they would regularly schedule appointments with me specifically, because I kept things fun, and they saw fast returns in our time together.
Teaching Style
I allow students to discover answers by themselves by prompting them with questions. This hands off technique reflects the minimalist philosophy of the writing center I worked for, and I have found it is a far more effective way to help students grasp concepts which will globally make their writing better. Understanding the fundamentals of good writing is the most important tool to becoming a good writer; where merely diagnosing an issue and giving an answer for it leads to much more lazy writing in the future. That's what makes fundamental understanding so important, because it carries over into future assignments.
