I have 17 years of classroom teaching experience including Kindergarten, 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade. I have been a volunteer tutor at a local elementary school during their aftercare program. I have also been a mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Memphis to a first grader who had trouble with math (adding,subtracting, and multiplication). I have also helped fellow peers study for tests and the Reading and English sections of the ACT. I believe a hands on approach to teaching a subject is the best way for a child to succeed. I believe that flashcards as well as games help younger children succeed in mastering a subject. Making a subject fun is key to helping a child tackle a tough subject. For older kids, practice tests are very helpful as well as flashcards. Encouragement and support is also an important part of mastery.

With writing, there can be better ways to word a sentence or rearrange a paragraph and I try to help them figure this out on their own.
