Reading Comprehension is one of my top subjects! Prescribed reading strategies are used for a reason, but when those strategies do not take into account the learning profiles of the student using these strategies, then it will leave both the teacher and student feel disconnected and frustrated. For students with executive function or cognitive deficits, challenges with reading comprehension and expressive and receptive language skills, it is key for any educator to assess student comprehension and understand where the disconnect is. Many students benefit from chunking (reading short passages and asking questions) rather than tackling 20 pages in a book without engaging in "during reading" strategies (taking notes; asking questions; highlighting vocabulary words they do not understand; putting questions marks next to sentences that are confusing; etc.). I have over 15 years experience working with students whose greatest challenge was reading comprehension, and once we break down larger pieces of text into smaller, more manageable pieces, students start to build confidence and resilience and think more about "their thinking," which are the building blocks to becoming proficient readers and learners.

My teaching style is based on student-centered, social-emotional learning, where my core values are focused around differentiated, individualized instruction based on the learning profiles and interests of my students. NO two students learn the same and it is extremely important for me as an educator to meet the student "where they are," and utilize techniques and strategies that motivate learners to be invested participants in this partnership.

I primarily use the Socratic Method (question and answer) as my teaching style. I believe that asking students the right questions helps them to learn the information. Also, in certain instances I believe it helps the learning process if the subject matter can be related to an area of interest. I graduated with honors from a formal university, where I tutored fellow classmates; however, I gained most of my tutoring and teaching experience overseas, in a universal classroom. I have taught youth and adults in Mexico, Spain, Chad, Benin, Morocco and other countries. In most of those cases I was teaching English, but I also taught key aspects of health, sustainable development, lifelong skills and leadership. I taught classes ranging in size between 5 and 100. For the last four years I have been at Cardigan Mountain School, where I taught English, Latin, Homeric Greek, ESL, and Ancient History. I collaborated with the English Dept., providing, via Power Point Lecture Presentations, the historical background to Tennyson’s epic account of the Light Brigade at Balaklava and Shakespeare’s Henry V, and, as part of the eight grade history seminar, I delivered a forty-minute lecture on Hitler and the Holocaust. I base my teaching on the pholosophy of Eli Siegal: "Aesthetic Realism". It states that "All beauty is a making one of opposites, and a making one of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves" Thus, I relate the subject matter in hand to students' personal lives. For example, if we are learning Le Chartelier's Princlple, which concerns the response of a chemical reaction to stress, I have my students discuss the types of stress they experience, and their responses. We compare this to the beautifully precise and appropriate reaction in Chemistry, where the response is never inapproriate, insufficent or in excess.
