I taught middle school and high school Language and Literature for two years at a private school. During that time I also tutored in the subjects of history, math, and science. I am currently working on my Masters degree in Education and have had refresher courses in the areas of study outside of my initial degree. I love working with students and have taken courses specifically in test prep.
I am an active teacher. I want students to understand the subject in the context of their own lives as opposed to just learning definitions. If they can realate the information to an actual happening, they are more likely to remember. In terms of test preparation, aside from learning the information it is important to work on test-taking skills (relaxation, focus, etc.). I believe that in order to help a student you must first be able to connect with him/her. That could mean understanding a student’s background, researching the latest video games or playing softball after class. For example, several of the girls I worked with at the JEI Learning Center, spoke very little English. Often they got frustrated and just sort of shut down -- stopped responding. At first I tried to have them draw pictures but when that didn't work, I asked them to show me something from home. They folded cranes and strawberries out of the paper that I gave them. Though the exercise didn't help them understand verb tense, it did help build trust between us. After that, when they felt insecure or confused, I was less intimidating.

Teaching has become a major part of my life. I have taught mostly university students and adults but like teaching children as well. I believe that teaching older students is more challenging than teaching kids. I think adults require a more in depth explanation of grammar rules and structures. In my classes I gave these explanations with an easy going, patient, and fun attitude. With children, I think it is important to show them that hard work is important to achieve success in their future. Living in Korea and Japan opened my eyes to how hard other cultures work in order to reach their goals.
