My comments on tutoring Study Skills : The strategy of seeing how what is being studied can be applied is a great way to learn.

I like students to understand how the material they are learning can and is being applied to everyday situations. So I often will talk about the big topics that have been covered explain why they are useful and then show the student how to perform various calculations or apply the nessecary logic to solve problems.
I am a Mechanical Engineering and Geology dual major with a 3.6 GPA. I understand mathematics very well and have tutored fellow students in math and physics, successfully for years. I have a passion for learning and love when I can help others learn complex material and pass classes. My comments on tutoring Study Skills : I have worked with many children and adolescents over the years with ADHD, however, I must say that my most substantial experience has come from raising two boys with ADHD. My 19 year old was diagnosed (formally) at age 6 and has ADHD Combined Type. My 15 year old was diagnosed at an older age, mainly due to his having ADHD Inattentive Type. I began learning everything there was to learn about ADHD, its symptoms, treatment, and learning styles. I have been to many conferences and trainings and have tested and used many different techniques of teaching and handling academics, study skills, organizational skills, behavioral issues, planning, reminding, and other areas of executive functions.

Once I have an understanding of what a student is capable of I like to push them to go past their "comfort zone" in learning. It helps them understand that what may look difficult, may not always be so and that they only way to find out is to learn it. Also, I do not teach study habits. Instead I like to see what a students current habits are and work on expanding those habits so that the child does not get frustrated and overwhelmed. It is easier to learn more from current knowledge than try to teach a whole new way.
