I tend to prefer a Socratic method of teaching where the student discovers the answer through discussion, reading and research. I will use direct instruction on occassion when the need arises but my classroom is typically humming with group work and whole class discussions.
I have been teaching social studies in Cabarrus County for the past 12 years. I am nationally board certified and have my AP certification in World History. My comments on tutoring Study Skills : The strategy of seeing how what is being studied can be applied is a great way to learn.

I like students to understand how the material they are learning can and is being applied to everyday situations. So I often will talk about the big topics that have been covered explain why they are useful and then show the student how to perform various calculations or apply the nessecary logic to solve problems.

I am a College Student studying English and Politics

I was a tutor in high school for many elementary and middle school aged children. I am also experienced with writing papers, so I can help anyone who is writing for a college application or essay. I am a very quick learner, so if there is a subject I am not as familiar with I am willing to study it to help a student. My goal is to help students understand the context being taught, as well as teach them the importance of this knowledge. I have often used the phrase "When will I ever need this?" and I have learned later on in life that each subject is important. This is the messageI want to get across to children, that learning new things is a very important aspect of life.
I am a very firm believer that each human being has a different way of learning. I also believe that each subject has a different way to be taught. I teach based off of my students, as well as the subject.

Study Skills is one of my top subjects! 20 years of teaching and advising experience in top Charlotte private school.

For the last twenty years I have been teaching at one of the top private schools in Charlotte and I have enjoyed every minute of it. As my 3 wonderful children became more and more independent, I have taken more and more responsibilities including developing a peer tutoring program, chaperoning international trips, assisting with the yearbook publications...I have the reputation to not only know my topic but also to have great skills at helping students identify their weaknesses and giving them strong study skills that will carry over any discipline. I firmly believe that a good teacher is not just a specialist of his/her own field but someone who can figure out how a student learn and find the right way to transmit knowledge. The bottom line is, I just love teaching and I would welcome the opportunity to work with anyone who has a desire to learn.

My comments on tutoring Study Skills : I have worked with many children and adolescents over the years with ADHD, however, I must say that my most substantial experience has come from raising two boys with ADHD. My 19 year old was diagnosed (formally) at age 6 and has ADHD Combined Type. My 15 year old was diagnosed at an older age, mainly due to his having ADHD Inattentive Type. I began learning everything there was to learn about ADHD, its symptoms, treatment, and learning styles. I have been to many conferences and trainings and have tested and used many different techniques of teaching and handling academics, study skills, organizational skills, behavioral issues, planning, reminding, and other areas of executive functions.

I have worked with children and adolescents for over 30 years in various capacities and not only have a substantial amount of experience in varying types of special needs, but have very good rapport with children of all ages. I thoroughly enjoy them and they seem to pick up on that quickly. My approach to teaching revolves around determining the individual needs of the student, their strengths and weaknesses, and their particular learning style. I also feel it is very important to engage the student in participating as an important part of the learning process, gathering information on their likes and dislikes, their perception of their strengths and weaknesses, and what teaching techniques they feel work or do not work for them.
I have over 30 years of experience with infants, children, adolescents, and families, including work with infants and children in development of age app ... read more

I have an extensive background in education and residential treatment. My strengths are building and executing academic rigorous programs for students with and without special needs. I have experience tutoring individuals with ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia, and those who simply do not understand the work. For the past 4 years I have tutored students in all subjects in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Also, I have a child who is ADHD with whom I assist while doing homework. Though I do not have a degree, I am very patient as well as knowledgeable. I can break things down to any level so that your student will understand it better and possibly even enjoy the subject more.
Once I have an understanding of what a student is capable of I like to push them to go past their "comfort zone" in learning. It helps them understand that what may look difficult, may not always be so and that they only way to find out is to learn it. Also, I do not teach study habits. Instead I like to see what a students current habits are and work on expanding those habits so that the child does not get f ... read more
