Earth Science is one of my top subjects! I LOVE Earth Science. I am an amateur mineral collector, a real discoverer of dinosaur fossils, a gemstone bead wirer, and have taught earth science to my friends, sisters and anyone going with me on an expedition. Rock cycle, rock identification is gneiss. Not just schist to me! I have a great sense of humor, too.

Teaching middle school and high school science from 1983 to 2004, including every science subject listed in the TutorSelect list. I have worked as an educational consultant for national science laboratories, helping them train their scientists to work better in the school classrooms where they volunteer. I have worked for museums and for outdoor education programs, but have found the most satisfaction as a classroom teacher with all kinds of students. I have worked teaching teachers, but they were very difficult students.

I have a student now that I am helping with AP English who has dyslexia. I enjoy watching her grammar skills increase and her overall understanding of the concepts develop. I am great with any age individual and have the patience it takes to work with any kind of student (special needs included).
I believe that people learn the best when they understand the meaning and logic behind what they are learning. When a student can see a pattern develop they develop an understanding that can be universally applied to many different areas of study and life circumstances. Learning is different then memorizing. During my one year contract in South Korea I taught children of all ages, from 6 to 15. Working with children was very enjoyable and rewarding. My style of teaching is very upbeat and interactive. I also like to use different methods of teaching focusing on participation. I believe that children learn more if the class is lively and engaging. In a word, my teaching style is Socratic. Often that means I respond to a student’s question with a question that enables them to figure out answers for themselves. Other times, my questions are designed to stimulate ideas beyond the student’s view so they need to “stretch” a bit. I firmly believe this style encourages the student’s creativity and belief in their own capabilities.
