I am currently a paid tutor at Montlake Elementary School, assisting with language arts and math - at all levels. I have a secondary school teaching credential, and I taught English, reading, and ESL. As a lawyer, I have excellent writing skills especially in organization and editing. I love being in the classroom and helping students learn. When I am not in the classroom, I am a volunteer tutor (New Holly) assisting in math and reading. I just graduated from PLU with a degree in Business, a concentration in human resources, and a minor in psychology. I maintained a high GPA throughout my college experience and graduated with honors. I have very good study skills and am very organized. I took a variety of classes and excelled in writing papers and test preparation. Interactive--listening to and learning from student to determine "where they're at". Then, posing questions to enable them to find their own beginning/solution/answers. If session doesn't find a promising beginning, start from a base and progress with them. Interaction prevents or indicates "going too fast" or overwhelming them--"the eyes" are engaged or indicate "shut-down". Making the math or education "mean something" provides a reason for learning or further developing the concepts. Encouragement and sincere compliments are very important. Sharing your own struggles or an "ah-huh" moment helps ease the role differences toward a comfortable, encouraging, learning relationship.
