I like to start by encouraging the student to demonstrate what they know, and then give them a little nudge of guidance when they come to something that confuses them. If they're really stumped, then I try to teach them first from a conventional standpoint, then switch to a more example-based explanation. There is almost always an example or an analogy that can explain something that is confusing a student. Sometimes it takes a few examples before you find the one that makes sense to that person, but with a little patience it becomes easily understandable for the student.

My learning and teaching preference is reading/writing. I adjust to students who are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners. I like to use examples to drive concepts home, to make them relevant to my students' lives, and to ground these concepts in reality. Examples include, say, how geometry is used to create movie 3D special effects, or how algebra is used in sound editing in a sound studio. I am a senior at Reed College studying mathematics. While at Reed I have worked as both a grader and a tutor. Having graded assignments, I can quickly grasp multiple ways to approach a problem and give commentary where necessary. I also have experience working at an alternative school as a math tutor, with students who have trouble succeeding in traditional learning environments. Furthermore, being a current student and having recently taken the GREs, much of the material is still fresh in my mind.
As both a math student and tutor, I believe the most effective approach to learning is for the tutor to act as a guide, allowing the students to make the important connections. I am very patient and have good communication skills.

A Little Bit About Me...

Having graduated from a liberal arts university, I know that being well-rounded is very important in life. I graduated from Whitworth with a BS in Math and minors in Spanish and Computer Science, so I know what it is like to learn complex subjects. I have tutored my peers along with students younger and older than myself, as a mathematician and a Spanish speaker. I led a Spanish Live Lab for two years and informally tutored math for four. Also, I have a great deal of grammatical knowledge from writing research papers in math and computer science and Spanish.
I love teaching and relating to people. I know from personal experience that one good teacher can change the way a student views an entire subject. I am easy-going, friendly, and patient. I believe that all students have great potential and should be given every opportunity to fulfill it.
