Sign Language is one of my top subjects! I have been signing since 1994. Enrolled in college to receive an AA in American Sign Language, and will be continuing my education towards a Sign Language Interpreter Certification.

I started signing in 1994 when I met a deaf woman and her friend at my job. A few days later she came back and handed me a "Sign Language for Beginners" book. After many years of Deaf Clubs, Deaf Functions, and friends. Since 2003 I have been helping any deaf/hearing impaired people when they need help with communicating with what they call "Hearing" people. The deaf culture is very different and very interesting. I am now enrolled in college to get my degree in American Sign Language, then to get certified as a Sign Language Interpreter.
I try to keep away from the Sign Language books, It's hard to learn from a cartoon drawing or a picture with arrows showing the direction to move your hands. Sign Language can be a fun language to learn, you never know, the next person you bump into may be deaf. And wouldn't it be nice to be able to communicate with them?

My teaching style is visual. I think that children learn when things are hands on and they can see an actual model. I am not into lecture because with younger children which I usually work with are more touchy.
I have always wanted to work with children since I was in High School. It started when I was in the 11th grade and I would go to a daycare and tutor after school age children. In 2006 I enrolled in AmeriCorps and did afterschool tutoring at the PAL center. I am currently go to an elementary school to volunterr with ESOL children. I did 45hrs at Westside Elementary School and I will continue each semester.

A Little Bit About Me...

My goal as a teacher is to meet the individual needs of students, teaching them “how” to learn, and guiding them towards their full potential as learners and citizens. I strive to use strengths to turn weaknesses into success. I enjoy using many instructional methods, finding “the one” that can make a concept come to life. I feel it is imperative to “reach before teach” when it comes to identifying and meeting needs. Developing a bond of trust and commitment leads to a less stressful environment, opening the door to creative learning with little fear of failure. I use a lot of humor in my teaching; I like puns and really bad jokes and I’ve been known to dress in costume or speak in an accent all day.
I spent much time in college working with local teachers and tutoring their students. Upon graduation, I spent a year teaching 4th grade in a private school. In Florida, I continu ... read more

Work well with accomidating others in the different learning styles. Having a hard time explaining to teachers and professors about their teaching approach made me aware of the situation. I truly enjoy working with children and realize each child has a unique way of learning. Tutoring allows this one-on-one contact to discover how each child learns best. My teaching style focuses on improving a child’s memory and understanding of subjects. I like to alternate subject examples with practice to develop the student’s problem-solving strategies. I also help the student connect abstract concepts with things they can relate to in their own life. I use a lot of positive reinforcement and encouragement. To promote long term understanding I ask the student questions to encourage the student’s explanation to foster a deeper understanding of concepts.

I believe that an instructor’s primary role is to create an environment that encourages a real desire to learn by presenting the subject matter in a way that is interesting to the student and by striving to make it make it relevant to their lives. It is my role as an instructor to take abstract concepts and breathe life into them and make them real to the student. I think that it is important to understand and be constantly aware that different people learn in different ways. Because of this, I feel that it is important that an instructor uses a wide range of teaching methods in order to give each student the best opportunity to learn and understand the material.

A Little Bit About Me...

Enriching the lives of today’s youth is something very dear to my heart. With the hustle and bustle of our fast-paced world, it gets hard for them to find out who they are, and focus on what they need to be doing. I feel they push their education to the side, because they are forced to become adults too soon. I also feel that focus will not be regained until they find an instructor or tutor who they feel cares about THEM. I don’t judge any student for any reason. I believe all children learn differently, and some need a more unconventional approach to understand what they are studying. My biggest goal is helping these kids and making an impact on their life. I want them to remember me as the “tutor who cares”.
As a teenager, I learned the importance of having role models, both in and out of the classroom. Some of my biggest influences are old teachers and coaches. After I grad ... read more
