My comments on tutoring Reading : Extensive experience and training in Reading instruction for grades 6-adult, both in and out of classrooms.

I believe that all students can and will achieve academic success given appropriate instruction; i.e., instruction that is differentiated according to students' specific needs, learning styles, interests, and personal goals. Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.
After completing my undergraduate degree in English Literature at Florida State University, I worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County for two years. In 2009, I completed my Master's Degree in Communication at University of South Florida while simultaneously employed at the Department of Special Education. My comments on tutoring Reading : Is my best subject and I teach it phonetically. I believe that sounding out the words is the easiest way for comprehension. Certain rules must be applied though for words that sound the same.

In my tutoring sessions I spend time getting to know my student discovering his weaknesses, his strengths and evaluating his abilities to learn, and to comprehend. Then I devise a plan of action to help him overcome areas of fear and insecurity by helping him to build confidence and right attitudes towards learning. I then proceed to teach him good listening skills for comprehension with positive encouragement for new adventure. As my student becomes more confident, I then begin to work on his areas of weakness he has in learning to rise him up to a new level of expression. I tutored kids who were lagging behind the rest of the class at school as well as advanced language learners and helped them get ready for regional language contests. One of my achievements I believe is my excellent work with high school seniors to prepare for centralized testing. But the experience I value most is when my students who were performing about average gradually integrated into the rest of the class. Reading is one of my top subjects! Reading is a passion for me for two reasons; One because I am an avid reader and two because my older brother has a learning disability and I spend evenings helping him with his English/reading homework. With any student I would like to achieve a grade level increase.

I work with the students making them feel comfortable, never making the feel overwhelmed but enough work that they are working on the assignments that I give them. There is never any passing or failing, there is only learning. I welcome questions, I actually prefer a student to ask me 800 questions then not understand a topic that we will be covering.
