Experienced Math, Business and Standardized Test tutor

I have tutored math, business and science courses for high school students and adults for the last 20 years. I have tutored for standardized tests (ASVAB, FCAT, PSAT, SAT, ACT, etc) for the last 15 years - saving parents many thousands of dollars in tuition fees. I have also assisted students with homework help, time management and study skills.
I use the material that the student is familiar with to enhance the students understanding of the principles and processes that are being emphasized. I bring supplemental material for the subject area and use it as needed. Primarily, the student works problems or exercises that are required in front of me. The student verbalizes the steps and thinking processes about the subject so that I can correct fundamentals and errors in logic.

I achieved Summa Cum Laude honors from Sacred Heart University (SHU) and Magna Cum Laude honors from the University of South Florida (USF). In addition, I also graduated with the Gold Medal of Excellence (as the #1 computer science graduate in my class) at SHU. I have tutored students at the high school and college level for over nine years in varying disciplines: mathematics, sciences, computer science, psychology, and writing to name a few. Aside from my tutoring experience and academic success, I have real-world experience working in the computer science and healthcare industry. This knowledge allows me to create a simple to understand, yet powerful "connection of interest" between the student and their enthusiasm to learn. In other words, I am able to justify why the information the student is learning is relevant and how it applies to the real world.

I love tutoring, especially when students get it! The "light bulb" goes on.The most remarks I get are - "why did'nt my teacher show us that way?" I was chosen to teach math at a charter middle school; but the Board of Education (Manatee) voted to shut down that school after three days on the job. Subsequently, I began tutoring Math at Manatee Community College for three years. I've taken several refresher Math courses at MCC (3.66 GPA). This included 2 courses with Dr. Paul Nolting, author of the book "Winning at Math"; which concentrated on visual, auditory and tactile methoda of learning.
I tend to treat Math as a Game; how do I (the student) get to the answer? I go over the basics, set up the "plan of attack" to reach a conclusion. It's re-emphasizing the "Rules of the Game". I really want to get the parent(s) involved in this process.

As a professional in the field of physical education it is my obligation to change the way physical education is perceived in our society. The purpose of Physical Education is to help children develop the skills they will need for becoming functionally active and healthy people in society. It is important to realize that the mind and the body are closely linked together. Physical education and academic achievement are closely linked in that physical fitness promotes a healthy mind. I want my students to not only achieve in my class, but also to achieve academically in other classes. By teaching with that in mind, society will see that I play an intricate part of my student’s education.

Kids respond positively to my teaching style. I am motivating and understanding about their needs while striving to make them feel at ease. I have found that a child learns better when he/she feels a teacher is giving that student his/her total attention. Students do not want to compete with other forces. While classroom instruction is very fulfilling my heart really lies with one-on-one instruction.
As a teaching professional with a diverse background I bring a breadth of experience to all levels of teaching. I have been tutoring for 10 years and specializing in one-on-one instruction. I currently teach English at the college level, but I tutor privately in a variety of subjects. Two bachelor degrees, in English and Communications, a Masters in English, plus 30 graduate hours in Education give me a strong foundation for instructing. I am a passionate educator with five years of teaching experience ranging from middle school through high school. I have three years of administrative experience in a K-8 program. During my tenure I was responsible for writing curriculum and assisting teachers with implementation. My area of strength is literacy. A Little Bit About Me...

I love to tutor and work with students of all ages. Every student has their own learning style that must be found to help the student efficiently and substantially. I want to provide the best education possible by learning about the student and finding the best way to display topics to them. Every student already possesses the potential to succeed in any academic field; they just need great teachers, good study partners, great learning environments, and many learning experiences. I try to present material in a fashion that will hold the students interest and I also like to use visual aids. Learning must be made fun for the student for them to absorb the greatest amount of knowledge that they can!

A Little Bit About Me...

I am an USF graduate, GO BULLS. I have 6 years as a substitute teacher with Pinellas County Schools in math, science, social studies, language arts and a few other subjects. I have tutored in Math and Science free of charge. I like helping people if I can.
I work with any student that is welling to put some effort into learning. The students work for improvement and I work for different avenues of presentation. Math learning takes time and memory skills, without good practice techniques the material studied will just be lost in memory. The key to success is knowing what to learn and how to learn it.

I am eager to prepare more students for success in their studies. I will encourage students to develop a love for reading and writing. My experience in tutoring began while I was a high school student. My residence in Japan brought unique opportunities. I gave reading lessons to a first-grader who was a native English speaker. Within three years, he was beating two teens and four adults at Beyond Balderdash—a game that requires reading, writing, and creative thinking. Later, I tutored both a third-grader and a twelfth-grader in English as a Second Language. My mother, who has a master’s degree in Elementary Education, mentored me. I was responsible for my own homeschool studies at that time. By study and daily interaction, I attained conversational fluency in Japanese. After moving to Florida, I decided to major in English Education. When I did a teaching practicum, I worked with both ... read more
