My comments on tutoring Special Education : I worked all through high school with special needs children. And also in my adult working life had had to job train and teach on computer those with special needs.

Experience throughout school, work and personal experience dealing with the mentally challenged and dyslexia. my best friend had a son who was dyslexic and also he had ADD and I got him to trust me in babysitting and I taught him various things. I taught him how to read and write he could not accomplish that on his own. He was 11 at the time and I think with kids you have to be creative to teach them and I am very creative. I also have an aunt who is mentally handicapped, and I love spending time with her she is a very giving person. They teach me and it is always a joy to work with them and give something back.
Hands on approaches mixed with worldly knowledge, and a very patient style.

My son & myself have Dyslexia & ADHD, plus, my son has a few other learning disability's, so the experts say. We have learned together how to make all of this work for us. I researched a lot & learned how to teach him how to make it all this work for him. He was on low dose med's for 6 months, I took him off because he learned the difference in 7th grade. No reason for any more med's. I do not think kids should be labeled as "disabled" because others think different then they do! My son thinks way different then my daughter but that doesn't mean either one is wrong. My son is very successful at his job & he is now a boss & he loves his job. He is 31 years old and a great person, everyone like him.

A Little Bit About Me...

While attending USU, I spent two semesters working at Wilson Elementary School. I was a teachers aide in the special education classroom. I provided instruction and practice in reading, writing, and arithmetic. My first school of employment was a residential treatment center for troubled youth. While employed there, I taught math subjects ranging from General Math to Calculus. I learned to explain concepts in a variety of ways that did not result in the students become frustrated. I have written many reports describing student behavior, learning preferences, and classroom accommodations that would benefit the student. At my current school, I am teaching math courses to students grades 7th - 12th.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe you can only help the student learn if you are willing to take time to "bend down" to their understanding and help lift them up. As a person that easily empathizes with others, it is natural for me to take time to understand the person who I am tutoring. Through building trust with that person I can naturally help them to understand what they may be missing or not understanding. Through helping the student know that I care about their learning at a personal level I believe that they will learn to trust and the teaching/learning relationship will begin to naturally occur.
As a recent graduate of BYU in Business Management (finance emphasis) I have been able to show excellence in my own school work. I have a major GPA of 3.85 (including many Accounting and Finance classes) as well as receiving a 4.0 while taking the “finance core” classes. Receiving a score of “5” on ... read more

I prefer sitting at the student's elbow, with the assigned work in between us, focusing on it together. I talk about "it" rather than "you" to avoid making the student self-conscious. Writing can always be improved, and each student has areas of strength and weakness. I try to pick one area that needs the most attention, and focus on it. When there is significant improvement, I move on to the next area of weakness. Pointing out all of a student's mistakes and weaknesses at once drains morale, and that is counterproductive. Working on one area at a time keeps the student from being overwhelmed. I like to have the student read out loud to me, so that we can both see what needs improvement. I also point out what was done correctly to boost confidence. Goals are important, as well as establishing a time frame for achieving them.

With a Master's degree in counseling, I have had various experience working with youth on a clinical level. Before going into counseling I was on track to become a high school math teacher. I have taken courses up through Calculus III and Number Theory. I feel very capable in this area. I also am an avid and good creative and technical writer. I have tutored students from elementary to college level in mathematics, English, writing, basic sciences, and other various humanities subjects.
I've never met a "stupid" student. I see all people as capable, as long as they are willing. I find it easy to get a student interested in a subject when they have usually been bored in class. I easily create metaphors and practical examples for application of the subject at hand so the student can personalize their studies. Once a student sees how the subject "fits" in their life, their interest le ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I recently graduated from Brigham Young University in April 2011. I am a graduate in Communications can help in English, Writing, Editing but also took AP Calculus and AP Statistics and passed both tests. I love math but feel that communicating through writing is very important. During the last two years I have worked at an Elementary School as Para Professional tutoring children in Math and Reading both in small groups and one-on-one. I love helping children learn!
Building a good relationship with a child is key to helping them learn. When good relationships are developed children can then trust the teacher or tutor to help them in whatever way possible. This relationship builds a good emotional bank account and children will do hard things when asked. I know that all children can learn. I have seen it while working with the wonderful children at the school I worked at.

My experience at Brigham Young University instilled in me a desire to pursue lifelong learning and to assist others in their own quest for knowledge. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in English Education and took advanced courses in Math and Spanish (I taught English in El Salvador). During my time at BYU, I fine-tuned my writing skills and also helped other students do the same, especially as I worked as an editor of a university journal. I have taught ACT preparation classes relating to all areas of the test (math, science, English, and reading comprehension). I have also been a private English, history, and science tutor.

A Little Bit About Me...

I taught in a bi-lingual charter school and worked with students from many diverse ethnic backgrounds I also substituted in my off-track time for ESL instructors and Special-Ed students with learning disabilities. Each year I taught I attended special seminars on reading development and literature.
I enjoy teaching and working with children of all ages. I received an award for classroom management, and work well with students who are learning English as a second language. I believe all children have the potential to excel if given the opportunity. I believe that attitude and approach create the climate in a classroom. I believe that learning is growth and not accumulation. I also believe a student must believe a teacher cares before they will care what a teacher knows. It is also important for a teacher to help a student develop positive self-esteem.
