A Little Bit About Me...

My son & myself have Dyslexia & ADHD, plus, my son has a few other learning disability's, so the experts say. We have learned together how to make all of this work for us. I researched a lot & learned how to teach him how to make it all this work for him. He was on low dose med's for 6 months, I took him off because he learned the difference in 7th grade. No reason for any more med's. I do not think kids should be labeled as "disabled" because others think different then they do! My son thinks way different then my daughter but that doesn't mean either one is wrong. My son is very successful at his job & he is now a boss & he loves his job. He is 31 years old and a great person, everyone like him.

ORTON-Gilingham multi sensory approach. Math without words until the concept is mastered. Using lots of manipulatives including video games, that teach concepts.
I Have worked for the Davis County School district for 12 years. The last few years I have been working intervention for students who are not performing at grade level. I have learned that not all kids can learn the way they are taught in school. My 8 year old is dyslexic. I Have studied the Orton-Gilingham multisensory approach to reading and spelling. I have also learned to engage children in activities that are fun and creative. I will not be doing the same teaching style as there school.

I enjoy teaching and working with children of all ages. I received an award for classroom management, and work well with students who are learning English as a second language. I believe all children have the potential to excel if given the opportunity. I believe that attitude and approach create the climate in a classroom. This is a time where the students is relaxed and open to learning new ideas. There is not pressure to learn, but an excitement to succeed. All students can learn, given the proper instruction. Teachers have to pay attention to the learning preferences of the student. Effective instruction identifies strengths to build on and uses them to teacher additional concepts. Though I studied Psychology while attending Utah Valley University, I spent two and a half years tutoring college students in English. I spent my senior year editing a scholarly journal for the School of Business Management. As a tutor, I helped students who were learning English as a second language to comprehend and properly use idioms and phrases in their writing, as well as helping them with spelling and grammar. I also helped students whose writing lacked polish to improve papers written for many different subjects. I helped an otherwise smart dental student who struggled with composition write an application for dental school, and he got in.

I easily create metaphors and practical examples for application of the subject at hand so the student can personalize their studies. For six years I have enjoyed a "love affair" with teaching.
