I am a graduate of Virginia Tech with a BS in Biology with a concentration in microbiology. I also have minors in leadership and Chemistry. Therefore my understanding of the sciences and basic mathematics is quite extensive. For two years in school I tutored in mainly Chemistry but I also tutored in Chemistry applied mathematics such as statistics, geometry and algebra. I also was an EMT for five years and as part of my duties I mentored the new EMTs. I also, as a senior EMT member, hosted many Girl Scout and Boy Scout events. I am a firm believer that the science subjects are not as difficult as many students are afraid they are. I have a talent for teaching and love to help students learn material in a way other than how it is traditionally taught. I believe everyone has a different learning style and it is important to teach in ways that a variety of students understand. My teaching style is hands on and provides visual and verbal information. I believe that a big part of teaching is listening and observing. Not every student learns the same way, so it is important to be patient and try to understand what works best for the student. In many cases, examples are helpful in learning. Examples that are tailored to a specific student (e.g. drawing correlations to cooking for measurements, or sports for averages) can be a great basis for understanding concepts. I have done classroom teaching and one-on-one teaching. I prefer the one-on-one approach because it is so effective, and so satisfying for myself and the student when progress is made.
