A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that questions are more powerful teaching tools than simply delivering answers. I do not wish to teach my students WHAT to think; my goal is to help students learn HOW to think, and to develop a pssion for learning which extends well beyond their formal schooling.
Most of my career has involved some level of teachng or training. I trained new volunteers during the Peace Corps, I taught rural Tunisian families how to use available resources to improve their lives, training natural education instructors and volunteers at the Wells Reserve, traqining and coordinating volunteers within my roles as Executive Director, completing all course requirements for my Maine Teacher Certification, obtaining Ed. Over the past several years I have helped students achieve their potential in a wide variety of educational settings. I have taught several different subjects including social studies, math, reading, and French to students ranging from kindergarten to seniors in high school. Although my undergraduate degree is in history and my teacher certification is in social studies, I am fluent in French and am very good at mathematical subjects including geometry, trigonometry, and algebra.

My teaching style is entirely individualized to meet the needs of the child. As a special educator, my instruction has most often been diagnostic, targeted to meet specific goals and objectives. I relate activities to real life, so that lessons are interesting and students can apply and generalize learned skills. I use a multisensory approach. My lessons often include a combination of visuals, formula guides, manipulatives and other materials carefully selected to support and engage the individual student.
As a fourth year special education teacher, I have an extensive repertoire of strategies to help students learn. Having worked with both disabled and nondisabled children, primarily in small group and 1:1 settings, I have developed an acute sense of each of my students' learning styles, strengths and needs.
