A Little Bit About Me...

As the Title I Math Specialist at Peyton Elementary for three years, I had the opportunity to work with struggling learners as well as high achieving students in a small classroom setting. This on-the-job experience combined with numerous professional development credits earned in various areas such as differentiated instruction, math/literature connections, and mathematics pedagogy as well as two years of service on Peyton Elementary's "Child Study" team gave me the necessary background to be able to identify individual student needs and tailor lessons to address those needs. I recently completed two years of teaching Physical Science in a secondary school in Namibia as a Peace Corps volunteer. Prior to that I earned a BS in Computer Science which included a mathematics minor and courses in physics and chemistry. I tutored throughout my time in the Peace Corps, my undergraduate studies and my high school years.
As a classroom teacher I quickly learned to engage each student individually. I prefer tutoring because I can tailor my instruction to a specific student. Children have different learning styles so it is my responsibility as the instructor to adapt lessons to maximize learning for each child. Ideally I am able to guide a student to realize concepts in their own terms rather then dictate facts to them.
