My comments on tutoring Elementary Math : Children are being taught different ways to do basic math. Adults were taught adding the ones place, tens place, then hundreds place to come up with the right answer. Children are taught number bonds to come with the answer. It takes children an extremely long time to solve basic math problems because the children have to do multiple, unnecessary, and often confusing steps. I prefer to teach children the old-fashioned way of doing math as I believe this way is still best.

I have taught Early Childhood Education since 2000 to 2002 at Angel Academy Preschool. Later, I worked with children through the Y.M.C.A of Port Huron, Michigan and Lenawee County, Michigan. I helped school age children with homework in the afternoons and during the day taught preschool. While attending junior College I tutored students struggling with math. After graduating college I began substitute teaching in Michigan for elementary school children. I became a mother in 2011 and stayed home with my children for a few years, and then went back to substituting. In 2016, I earned my certification in Missouri and have worked with preschool age and elementary age children for the past 4.5 years.
I prefer a hybrid teaching style. If a standard teaching style was working for the student then they most likely would not need tutoring.

My preferred teaching style is discussion with leadership. When the student can relate to the information through own experience or peer experience the information is better absorbed. In a classroom situation a certain amount of lecture is also needed to stimulate the conversation and present the subject materials. As a tutor it would be more a discussion and personal discovery that isn't as easy with a large class.

I think the teacher can determine the student's ability to learn. I believe I could provide a fun and friendly environment where the student would feel comfortable asking questions. I also think that homework or problems are useful.
