I have a Bachelors Degree in Biology from Providence College and have been looking to get into teaching. I have been a substitute teacher for grades 9-12 since January, 2013. I am also in the process of getting my temporary teaching certificate for the state of Florida in science (grades 6-12). Upon enrolling my children in school, I decided to be an active part of their education. So, I assisted their teachers with everything I could. From my teaching experience, I have been able to remain sensitive to students’ unique capabilities and provide a supportive and positive learning environment. Teaching science is not about teaching facts. Science is based on theories, which evolve through the process of discovery. Thus, it is important to teach a student not what to think, but how to think. With little formal teaching experience, my philosophy draws on what I have liked in my teachers. I earned my Bachelors degree in Oregon and starting substituting there on my way to a permanent position. In Oregon, you must have a teaching certificate to sub. By the time my first year ended, they had passed a tax reform bill and were actually laying teachers off.
