Unlike many Journalism students, I have experience in arithmetic like algebra, pre-calculus and calculus. I've tutored students in math and writing, from first graders to college peers. The key to helping a student to retain information is to make certain that student possesses all the prior knowledge needed to support the new information. For example, it is very difficult to teach a student the concept of the passive verb voice if that student does not understand the difference between a verb and other parts of speech. Everyone has the ability to learn but not everyone has the same ability. Most people are visual or tactile learners whereas most teachers, in my experience, use verbal/aural instruction methods. I believe in tailoring my teaching to the needs of the student and not to what I am most relaxed with. I have personally taught several tactile students who had to have something in their hands or they could not grasp the concepts.
