I also directed and taught children's programs with the YMCA for children age birth through prekindergarten, having received the YMCA Focus Award for Excellence in Children's Programs. As cliché as this sounds - my favorite part of teaching is the satisfaction of knowing I made a difference. I have interacted with individuals across countless backgrounds and understand the idea of each student needing to hear things in their own terms. The simple concept penetrates through my patient teaching style. Some of my favorite ways to connect with students is to create simple analogies using subjects which interest them. My overall personable nature makes it easy for students to talk to me and I can always be counted on for advice (whether it be academic or otherwise).
My teaching experience began during high school when I would help out at my church's Sunday School providing remedial services like handing out papers. Since then I have earned a bachelor's degree in finance and economics with ambitions to earn a PhD. During my undergraduate experience I tutored begi ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a teacher I have always desired to teach in a way that I know I am communicating with my students. My teaching style includes making eye contact with my students to make sure they are with me. If I sense that their eyes have "glazed over," it is time for a change of pace. I might interject some humor or tell a short story to give them a break. I know that learning is hard work. I would also use games and projects to give them a change of pace. Sometimes I would assign a lesson for them to teach. Taking classes on field trips as an occasional alternative to classroom teaching is another tool I use, giving my students a passive learning experience. I strive to make the learning experience enjoyable.
As a high school student, I began teaching Sunday School and continued throughout my college years. While stationed in the USAF in Alaska, I decided to pursue teaching as a car ... read more

I am in the Education field to make a difference in student’s lives. I hope to do this through instruction and example. I believe these two elements intertwined and essential for any educator. I am value the “Teacher as facilitator” education model. Today, I classify my teaching style as a constructivist theory with humanist elements. I believe that a combination of these three models will ensure the greatest amount of learning for students as I prepare them for further education. In my experience, working with at-risk, failing, or youth in general requires a level of acceptance from the student. Educators cannot reach that level if they talk down to their students. I feel I am able to bridge that gap and reach students on a personal level.

For the past five years, I have worked in Minnesota as a Technical Writer for a small healthcare company and informally tutored family members and friends. From January, 1993 through August, 2000 I taught Writing: 115, 121, and 122, Portland, Oregon's Community College English Compostition sequence. My students composed essays which supported a thesis statement through structure appropriate to both thesis and audience. Students learned to revise thoughtfully at all stages of the writing process, focus on developing expository and critical writing skills, and to synthesize, integrate and document sources used to support and sustain an argumentative thesis statement. I placed emphasis on individual contact, close reading practices, and developing powers of clear expression. In addition, I tutored women living in transitional housing while they prepared to take the G.E.D. exam. Assisted stu ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have done a lot of teaching and tutoring, both with adults and young people. Most of my experience, though, comes from working with high school and junior high school students. I spent the majority of that time as a tutor/ mentor and would work with the students one on one or in small groups, both in the library or in the classroom. It was really the most wonderful experience and I was able to provide tremendous benefits to the students on both an academic and personal level.
I really do place something of a premium on being able to connect with all of my students on an academic and personal level. I believe that this helps them as they know that their teacher and tutor cares about them and their future and, as such, this causes them to grow and excel. I can attest to such things happening with many of my students and for that I am incredibly thankful.

I greatly enjoy teaching children at all levels. Through a variety of approaches and encouraging persistence, I believe children can gain knowledge of and proficiency in all subjects. A multi-disciplinary approach ensures a child's growth has both depth and breadth. I aim to teach in a way that develops the intellect and cultivates the character of my students so that they become critical and virtuous members of and contributors to society.
I became interested in tutoring during my three years of graduate study at Princeton Theological Seminary. Studying theology in my undergraduate and graduate work required me to invest strongly in multiple subjects such as history, philosophy, languages, politics and literature. This equipped me to tutor multiple subjects at various levels.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that an education is the most important foundation for a person. I am very patient and have found students learn best when each new piece of information is linked to prior knowledge. Each student learns at a different pace and in a different way.
During my time at the University of Minnesota I earned two BS degrees in Mathematics and Statistics. I have a very strong background in math and science. While attending college I gained a lot of experience in education. I privately tutored, facilitated Peer Assisted Learning sessions, and also was a teaching assistant at a Saturday program instructing 4th and 5th grade girls on special topics in math. After graduation, I joined Teach for America and taught high school Algebra 1 and Geometry for seven months.

Every child learns differently. In a world where we corporately streamline everything so that it all comes out pre-packaged and exactly the same we often lose sight of how unique each person is. I find that listening carefully to a child's reasons for having difficulty can help you to better understand how to help them learn. I find that children are often given too little credit - especially children with special needs. All children can be more than the world expects them to be. I just enjoy helping them realize that.
My degree in psychology has enabled me to understand all children better, and to work especially well with special needs students. I have experience tutoring students from the ages of 3 to 40+. Subject-wise I have taught Writing, ESL, Spanish and Karate. I have even given self-esteem building talks to grade-schoolers and middle-schoolers. My experiences as a writing ... read more

I have been told I am a patient and imaginative teacher. I have been a camp counselor at a nature camp for six summers and have tutored and taught for an additional 5 years. In this time I learned how to help children learn, and how to make it fun. For many children learning how to teach them is the hardest part, i.e. to use visual aids, or to make use of kinetic learning. With many years of experience I have learned to identify and then utilize the appropriate learning style to achieve the maximum level of improvement.
Throughout my four years at Marquette I tutored in three programs including the federally recognized TRIO program to help advance the college prospects of inner city minorities. I tutored in high school and college level math, science, social studies, English and literature. At Marquette I earned a BA in history and theology. I also studied abroad and at Marq ... read more
