As a teacher I have always desired to teach in a way that I know I am communicating with my students. My teaching style includes making eye contact with my students to make sure they are with me. If I sense that their eyes have "glazed over," it is time for a change of pace. I might interject some humor or tell a short story to give them a break. I know that learning is hard work. I would also use games and projects to give them a change of pace. Sometimes I would assign a lesson for them to teach. Taking classes on field trips as an occasional alternative to classroom teaching is another tool I use, giving my students a passive learning experience. I strive to make the learning experience enjoyable. As a high school student, I began teaching Sunday School and continued throughout my college years. For the past five years, I have worked in Minnesota as a Technical Writer for a small healthcare company and informally tutored family members and friends. I have done a lot of teaching and tutoring, both with adults and young people. Most of my experience, though, comes from working with high school and junior high school students. I spent the majority of that time as a tutor/ mentor and would work with the students one on one or in small groups, both in the library or in the classroom. It was really the most wonderful experience and I was able to provide tremendous benefits to the students on both an academic and personal level. I became interested in tutoring during my three years of graduate study at Princeton Theological Seminary. Studying theology in my undergraduate and graduate work required me to invest strongly in multiple subjects such as history, philosophy, languages, politics and literature.
