I believe that each child has their own special style of learning in which they succeed the best at. When I tutor students I take the time to get to know each student on an individual basis and as a unique person. I make it a priority to determine their learning style and use that to implement a plan. I try and understand the reason they are having problems in their studies and then execute a plan in which they can succeed. I create study guides, review questions, and sample test questions for the students as well. 10 Years of teaching Math experience at the Junior High and Senior High level. I taught Basic Standards Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and ACT Test Prep. Through my Master's Coursework, I integrated the Cognitive Tutor which was a computer program that assisted with the thought process in problem solving. Through the 5 years that I used it, students' interest in Math had risen while still competing with traditional chalk board styles of teaching.
My teaching style is one of real life applications, fun, and making it understandable. For example, when discussing slope, we can study downhill skiing or rooftops. I also taught a semester of undergraduate astronomy at both the University of St. Thomas and at Normandale Community College near the end of my graduate school years. During my time at the University of Minnesota I earned two BS degrees in Mathematics and Statistics. I have a very strong background in math and science. While attending college I gained a lot of experience in education. I privately tutored, facilitated Peer Assisted Learning sessions, and also was a teaching assistant at a Saturday program instructing 4th and 5th grade girls on special topics in math. After graduation, I joined Teach for America and taught high school Algebra 1 and Geometry for seven months.
