I try to be a "guide on the side" as I help students create knowledge and realize their own potential.I believe the best way to learn is by creating understanding of conceptual ideas rather than attempting to memorize content. This is best achieved through constructive learning experiences that allow students to see the bigger picture and understand the brooder concepts. Once the student has a strong conceptual background, they can begin to work on memorizing facts, figures, and vocabulary to accompany their conceptual understanding. While attending BYU I worked in the student advisement center part-time, mentoring and helping students develop their schedules, and tutored them in subject matter from courses I'd already completed. I served as a volunteer representative for the LDS church for two years in Denmark and Iceland. I speak fluent Danish and Norwegian, and I taught extensively on many topics to all age groups while over there. I believe you can only help the student learn if you are willing to take time to "bend down" to their understanding and help lift them up. As a person that easily empathizes with others, it is natural for me to take time to understand the person who I am tutoring. Through building trust with that person I can naturally help them to understand what they may be missing or not understanding.
