I have worked in education at the community college level for several years. I worked as an English Tutor for four years at Washtenaw Community College before being asked to join the part-time teaching staff. My class load consisted mostly of Composition I and Technical Writing classes; occasionally I would substitute for Literature courses when needed. In addition to my educational experience, I also have corporate experience working as a Technical Writer/Documentation Specialist in companies such as: EDS, GM, and Consumer Energy. I have been teaching for close to fifteen years now, and have had a great deal of experience in working with students from Kindergarten all the up to adult education. This has enabled me to become an extremely well-rounded, adaptable, and flexible educator who is able to wear many hats whenever necessary. I have taught most subject areas and tutored students for SAT/ACT college entrance exams, math, writing, english, Spanish, etc... I believe in empowering our students whenever possible. In 2007 I had the wonderful opportunity of being one of two teachers at the Ann Arbor Academy's lower school for students with learning disabilities. I have worked as a Teacher's Assistant for three years where I did extensive tutoring with one student over the course of the year. I substitute taught for two years where I learned a great deal about schools, particularly elementary schools and their various curriculum and expectations for grade levels. As well, I was a full time tutor and mentor for students at Pine Ridge Academy for a year while I lived in Burlington. I also teach the second grade religious school class at my temple. After graduating from DePauw University, my first teaching experience was at Rose Elementary Open School, which is a Detroit Public School. I was a building substitute. I worked there for one year until I found a regular postion at a public school academy in Inkster, MI. I was moved around in the system because they hired too many teachers. I found my permenant teaching position at Aisha Shule, an African-centered public school academy, where I have been teaching for at least six years now. I have taught Kindergarten to 5th grade at Aisha Shule, but I have spent the most time teaching in my 2nd-3rd grade split. I prefer working with African American children. I am working on my Bachelor degree through Baker college and need six more courses to complete that degree. As a student at the University of Detroit Mercy, I worked as a tutor for two years. I helped other students struggling in mathematics and biology classes. Also, my senior year in college I worked as a Teaching Assistant for a Microbiolgy lab. In addition, I did student teaching for a Catholic Middle School. Many people have different teaching skills and techniques. I do not believe any technique to educate a child is better than any other technique. Each child learns differently. Understanding the fact that children learn differently is crucial. The teacher must be able to adapt to the child's learning style.
