The experiences that I have had teaching various math courses and physics, I think, allow me to frame lessons that address the subjects in a way that dovetails with students’ previous knowledge, and asks and answers the essential questions that the math or physics curriculum should involve. I strive to design experiences for students to step through to shatter their preconceived notions about math and the physical universe, and get them to understand underlying relationships. I work so that students see themselves as problem solvers through techniques involving the use of their developing understanding of concepts with memorable models. I graduated from the UConn with a B.S. in physics and a minor in mathematics. Because I have used calculus and linear algebra on a daily basis as a means of solving problems I have developed a fundamental understanding of mathematics; an understanding that only someone who has used thse mathematical tools extensively can achieve. During my Doctoral candidate years, I worked as both a engineering lecturer and laboratory instructor for 3 different engineering fields. The fields were circuit design, applied mathematics and practical laboratory equipment usage. I also gave lectures in Applied Optics (physics) for Seniors at Clarkson University during my last Doctoral year (1984-85) at campus. Informal for large groups as I wanted the students to see me as like them, but with enough capability to inspire them to listen. I learned early on you cannot make anybody learn anything. You must inspire them to want to learn. At the 1-on-1 setting (tutoring level), I work at a very detailed level with the particular student I have with me at the time.
