As a high school student, my first job was at Kumon Math and Reading Center where I helped tutor Math students for 2 years. Once in college, my tutoring experiences were limited to summers but was able to help one student pass her summer school math class so that she could graduate. In the last 5 years I have helped many students improve their grades as well as helping a student with cancer complete all of her coursework while she was out during treatment. I prefer to work with small groups of students or individuals as it is easier to meet each student's needs. I am very concise and methodical, but am also sensitive enough to pace myself according to the student's needs. Of course, experience is the best teacher, so I usually review the points that the student has questions on, provide an example of the principles in action, and then help the student work through some problems until he or she understands satisfactorily. My teaching style devotes about half the time to direct instruction, but I make that a firm upper limit. The student must do the active learning in a classroom, and I foster this by Socratic questioning, discussions, and project work. Tutoring demands an even lower percentage of direct instruction than does classroom teaching, and as a tutor I encourage the student to direct his own session as much as possible.

A Little Bit About Me...

One of my many passions in life is working with kids, specifically tutoring them. I have found that it is easier to tutor a student when they know that they are surrounded by positivity.
