I have a BA in Psychology, MS in Zoology and BS in Computer Science. I have lifetime Arizona Community College certification in psychology, biology, ecology and remedial math. My experience with special populations includes: three years full-time on the Navajo Reservation; three years part-time at the SALT Center at the University of Arizona working with learning disabled students; and a hands-on nature camp for deaf middle-schoolers. My favorite experience has been the opportunity to design the curriculum, code the programs, and teach the student counselors for the U of A's Computer Science week-long summer enrichment program for teens.

A Little Bit About Me...

While studying Physics at Iowa State University, I first discovered my love for teaching and tutoring and have been doing it almost continuously since then. I worked for the ISU Academic Success Center helping groups of 1-4 students learn calculus and calculus-based physics for 3 semesters. They always left my sessions understanding the subject better and gave me the highest reviews possible. Later, after briefly attending grad school, I went to Mexico and taught for a year. In my time there, I worked at both a private language school and as a 9th grade teacher at a private school. During this time, I learned a great deal about the English language as well as how to run a small class. Since returning to the US, I have also tutored my cousins in Spanish and ACT preparation. My teaching style is very simple. I want to make sure that students understand the concept, so they can succeed in their math classes. I have the ability to model concepts by providing students specific examples. I believe that everyone has the ability to do mathematics. But in order to learn mathematics, they need to get their hands dirty and work on many problems. As a tutor, I believe it is crucial to get students to actively participate in the process. Experience has taught me that students do not respond well to long lectures; instead, I teach by asking questions and encouraging students to find the answers for themselves. I am able to explain concepts that children do not understand, but I insist that they attempt to work through problems first.
