My experience suggests that students must participate to fully benefit from the teaching and learning experience. This implies that they must be interested in the subject. Therefore it is, in part, the teacher's role to engage the students and guide them in a manner that engenders their interest. Beyond this I have found that students respond best when their strengths are recognized and their efforts rewarded. I am a home-schooling mom who has been tutoring mathematics for over ten years. I began tutoring math while still in high school. In college, I facilitated study groups and 1-on-1 tutoring sessions. I graduated with a BA in Mathematics with a GPA of 3.19. I am a member of the Math Honor Society Pi Mu Epsilon. I have spent the last year teaching math through an Adult Education program, where I have helped dozens of people get past there fear of math and move into understanding. I have experience working with a wide spectrum of learning styles and disabilities. I believe that everyone posses the ability to learn and that no two people learn exactly the same way. I present mathematical concepts in a way that will arouse curiosity and interest in the subject in a way that is unusual, new or otherwise fascinating for each individual student. Working with people, particularly children, has always been a passion of mine. Through the psychology program at Husson College I was able to gain a better understanding of human interaction, interpersonal relationships, as well as to obtain further insight on the foundation of the cognitive wiring in which we all possess. I also have a 6 year old daughter, who I have found to be the key to my drive in watching all children achieve academic success. I think the process starts with parents but branches out into the world of educators, and truly is a battle that can be won as long as there is always a core group of people committed to each child's success in the classroom.
