I would almost consider myself an expert on phonics. It is the basics of learning to read. A child must know phonics and sight reading in combination to be able to read, but without the basics of phonics they will never be able to sound out any word for themselves and memorize it.Unfortunately mot schools today only teach one or the other. To teach reading, I teach the children to use all the reading strategies used by good readers.Examples of those strategies would be sight words, visual and context clues, and phonics. Then, I prefer to use leveled readers to improve their fluency and comprehension. For writing, after assessing their composition, I work with them to improve where needed skills such as organization, elaboration, complex sentences and transitions. I use hands on materials and lots of practice to teach math. I taught grades kindergarten, first grade and second grade for a total of twenty-six years. Since then, I have tutored pre-k through 5th grade. My last assignment was tutoring a fifth grader in writing composition.
