I will tailor my teaching to the individual student. One thing I've learned in my education program is that some kids learn visually while others learn auditorily, and so on. I believe in critical thinking; that is one skill that is lacking in school and in society generally. The task of the teacher, ultimately, is to get their student to that point, where he or she is challenging his or her mental models or basic assumptions concerning reality, with the tools the teacher has given the student. I've been teaching informally most of my adult life. I earned a 193 out of a possible 200 on a Praxis test that covered content knowledge of my subject area (English literature), and 179 in a comprehensive middle school language arts test, and am enrolled in Capella University, where I'm currently pursuing a master's of science degree in K-12 studies. I was home-schooled until the sixth grade with my three brothers. I completed junior high at a private school and then graduated Salutatorian from a public high school. My parents operated a small day care that I worked in with school age children completing homework assignments. I have also worked in a Day Care as a caregiver for small children. Volunteering at a Family Literacy program and doing Student Practicums for three years followed by a semester of Student Teaching have all prepared me to teach children from all backgrounds with different educational and emotional needs. Although I have been self employed for the last 6 years, I went back to school last year to add Science and Math for middle school to my certification. I passed the Praxis for both of those subjects spring of 2010. I was not able to get a full time teaching position this year. I went back to working for myself but would love to tutor. I have tutored for 3 years while I worked for Tryon Elementary school. I had great success with the students I worked with, in particular concerning math. I am very qualified to work in a tutoring capacity. I believe in good classroom management and organized lesson plans.
