Although I have been self employed for the last 6 years, I went back to school last year to add Science and Math for middle school to my certification. I passed the Praxis for both of those subjects spring of 2010. I was not able to get a full time teaching position this year. I went back to working for myself but would love to tutor. I have tutored for 3 years while I worked for Tryon Elementary school. I had great success with the students I worked with, in particular concerning math. I am very qualified to work in a tutoring capacity. I believe in good classroom management and organized lesson plans. I set appropriate boundaries and expect the students to follow the rules that are set before them. That being said I try to make the learning as fun as possible but organized. My teaching style is to come from a place of respect and caring for the student. I will never strip a student of their dignity. I love teaching and relating to young people. As I work with a student, supporting and encouraging them, I help them move forward in ability and knowledge, as they become more competent and confident, gaining their own momentum. I teach because I love children. It is very satisfying to help a young person with their studies. I have been in elementary classrooms from Kindergarten to 5th grade and feel comfortable teaching all subjects. I love teaching and excel at engaging students in their work.

I enjoy teaching both children and adults, from beginners on up to future music majors. Each student is unique, so I try to adapt my instruction to take advantage of each students strenghts. Those strengths may be musical background, ability to play by ear, strong theory skills, and so on. I also enjoy teaching different musical skills such as: Theory, ear training, and arranging. The thing I enjoy most about teaching, is seeing the excitement in a students eyes and behaviour when he or she really understands what a truly wonderful gift music is. After graduation from App. State, I traveled across much of the US as a professional musician. I have teaching experience with both adults and childeren in both classical music and church music. I also have experience in recording as a producer and arranger.

I understand that any child can run into problems with schoolwork. I try to find out why the child is having a problem before trying to help them. Did he miss something and fall behind? Is she simply bored with the subject? The approach I take with the child depends on the answers to these questions. I feel it is important for the learner to understand that there is a reason for making the effort to learn each subject. In math, I like to assign the numbers and equations to subjects the learner likes, such as pizza, sports or music, for example. As a graduate of a Health Science program at a competitive public university, Clemson University, I showed an understanding of many science disciplines. In the course of earning my BS in Health Sciences with a Concentration in Pre-Professional Health Studies, I became well versed in biology as well as chemistry. I have also demonstrated a passion for education as I wish to continue my own education in a masters program. I attended the School for Creative and Performing Arts in my home town. I have a skill for the Visual Arts and have had many years of Art History. I also read music and play the piano. I love working with children and students of all ages. I was a volunteer at Shriners Childrens Hospital for many years in the recreational therapy department.
