My approach to teaching is an interactive one. Although I teach at the college level which tends to be more of a lecture environment, I try to bring in current events and real life examples of science in action and get a dialogue initiated with students to help them understand the relevance of science in their day to day lives. I think the Socratic method of self-discovery is one of the most effective ways to convey the process of discovery in science and the dynamic nature of the field. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a student reach a level of understanding that they never thought possible.

A Little Bit About Me...

I recently finished a double-major in college and maintained a GPA of 3.75. I took many education courses throughout my college career in obtaining my degree in Childrens' Studies. I have helped tutor in biology, earth science, social studies, English, algebra, reading, and Spanish.
I absolutely love working with kids and teens. I believe that all children want to experience success, but each might define "success" a little bit differently. I am willing to take the time to find out what motivates each individual student and go the extra mile to help them. I am a firm believer in experiential education and try to relate what a student is learning in class to something they love, engaging and involving them in the process as much as possible. As a tutor, I do my best to make things fun while also making progress.

I have a Master of Arts degree in English from Utah State University and have taught EFL overseas and within the US. Recently (from 07-08), I worked as a Math Tutor for challenged fifth graders and also for Kindergarteners part-time at Lincoln Elementary in Layton while my son was in pre-school. I am competent in elementary math and sincerely enjoy helping others to find the inherent beauty of numbers and what they can do.
I love kids - they are often sweet, funny, easily impressed and are a great audience. I know that it is possible to make learning fun through a close, interactive relationship with a student - showing and guiding them through your own discovery of the subject. There have been times when I could feel one of my students learning; it is always a smile-provoking moment and I treasure every one.

I never realized exactly why people go into teaching until I gained first hand experience. Teaching is one of the most rewarding things one can do as a profession. When I first started lab instructing, I immediately fell in love with it and did it as long as the university allowed me.
