A Little Bit About Me...

I have a Master of Arts degree in English from Utah State University and have taught EFL overseas and within the US. Recently (from 07-08), I worked as a Math Tutor for challenged fifth graders and also for Kindergarteners part-time at Lincoln Elementary in Layton while my son was in pre-school. I am competent in elementary math and sincerely enjoy helping others to find the inherent beauty of numbers and what they can do.
I love kids - they are often sweet, funny, easily impressed and are a great audience. I know that it is possible to make learning fun through a close, interactive relationship with a student - showing and guiding them through your own discovery of the subject. I never realized exactly why people go into teaching until I gained first hand experience. Teaching is one of the most rewarding things one can do as a profession. I completed my bachelors of science in biology from Mesa State College, after which I went on to receive my masters degree in evolutionary biology from The University of Texas at Arlington. I then pursued a Ph.D from Brigham Young University. Although I completed all my coursework and my comprehensive exams and was approximately 80% done with my dissertation, I opted to leave the program to pursue my passion of teaching. I have been teaching general biology and anatomy and physiology, as well as zoology labs, at both UVSC and SLCC ever since. I have not taught professionally, but I do have to help roommates and classmates with their work on a regular basis. I like to give them little tricks and tips for figuring out different kinds of problems. I don't like to just tell them how to do the problem.
