I worked for 12 years as a Special Education teacher in the public school system, teaching students with ADD, learning disabilities, autism, Aspergers, emotional and behavior disorders, and mild intellectual disabilities in a resource room and inclusion setting. I noticed that Deaf students were not getting an adequate education so I decided to finish my degree so that I would have the ability to have more influence with my student's ability to be successful regardless of their disability. I earned my BA in education with an endorsement in English. I have also had additional education in the area of Diversity and experience in working with special needs students. What I have learned working with students is that many do not learn in the same manner. I beleive in what is called top process learning. Given the student a concept and allowing them to explore the possibilities of how one arrives at such a concept has allowed deeper critical thinking and strategic planning. However, this method is not predominately taught in Georgia education system. I have found this method to be very effective. The other method is patience. Students who strugge with their academic learning usually are having other areas of difficulty which may be social learning. Having clinical training allows me to make a more accurate assessment.
