I worked for 12 years as a Special Education teacher in the public school system, teaching students with ADD, learning disabilities, autism, Aspergers, emotional and behavior disorders, and mild intellectual disabilities in a resource room and inclusion setting. What I have learned working with students is that many do not learn in the same manner. I beleive in what is called top process learning. Given the student a concept and allowing them to explore the possibilities of how one arrives at such a concept has allowed deeper critical thinking and strategic planning. However, this method is not predominately taught in Georgia education system. I have found this method to be very effective. The other method is patience. Students who strugge with their academic learning usually are having other areas of difficulty which may be social learning. Having clinical training allows me to make a more accurate assessment.

A Little Bit About Me...

While pursuing my bachelor’s degree, I took an interest in tutoring children. I began my tutoring experience as a volunteer at a local elementary school near the college. I also branched out and began tutoring adolescents in a juvenile detention center. After completing my undergraduate degree, I obtained a position teaching 8th grade math/special education.
