My comments on tutoring MCAT: I have studied for and taken the MCAT, and will be applying to medical school in the summer of 2013.

I have succeeded as a Pre-Med student and psychology major while playing for the University of Colorado D1 women’s volleyball team and thus developed excellent study skills. I have taken and done well on the MCAT and I am applying to medical school in the summer of 2013. I have spent time tutoring my younger brother and many of my teammates and friends in biology, general chemistry, writing/editing, and all psychology fields.

I took the MCAT before the recent revision. I scored a 40 which got me into three medical schools. I got my PhD in chemistry instead. Physical: 13 Biological: 14 Verbal: 13 I am an organic chemist. I will only teach you at the level you are assigned. My background makes it easier for you. Anyone can learn organic chemistry or the other subjects and standardized exams I've tutored. I focus on understanding and independence with a minimum of memorization. In fact, that's the only difference between an "A" and something that is unacceptable. I hold a 100% pass rate (or better). I've learned how to make the subject simple, save you time, and learn so you retain it. We work at your pace (nothing else works) but we make progress immediately. I establish rapport with students and quickly gauge what the difficulties are and what they concerns are. I guide you through the process a

I obtained a BA from CU at Boulder in 2004 in Psychology and Communications and I am now currently one year away from attending medical school. I have taken all the science courses required to get into medical school and have been tutored in many of them as a supplemental form of education. In my time being tutored many other students realized how much more knowledge of the subject i had gained above them that they in turn recruited me to tutor them. I have been doing that for approximately six years. I am a Visual learner/teacher, I feel it is much easier to learn when being able to visualize what is happening. Many of the sciences happen at such a microscopic level that it may be hard to comprehend what is actually happening so with larger visual aides I believe learning is much easier and less stressful.

During my time at the LRC, I developed a teaching style where I first understood the learning style of the student (i.e. visual or auditory) and then discovered why they wanted tutoring, wanted to focus on, and what they wanted to accomplish. I would then delve into the subject matter at hand, drawing, discussing, or having them draw any specific process or problem. Finally, I would have them tell me what they understood from the process that we just discussed. If I felt the student was confident in their abilities I would test them, if I found that they were not very confident in their abilities, I would discuss the lesson and confirm that they understood. In these cases, I would also try to work on their academic confidence. From September ‘08 - January ‘10 I was at the UCD – LRC tutoring students in Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Biochemistry doing individual tutoring as w

Perhaps stemming from my time as the owner of a successful construction company, I've found that I learn best when I'm provided mental imagery, which often means the employment of analogies and metaphors. Cell biology became simplified when viewed as the textile manufacture and the subsequent distribution and utilization of the products. Due to being a non-traditional student I've also realized that patience is imperative. I've felt like instructors have given up on me in the past, only to keep forging ahead either by myself or with the aid of a tutor and eventually master whatever material was at hand. Also, my experience in the past few years in the E.R. has allowed me to become adept in dealing with and defusing difficult situations. My experience as a non-traditional student has payed huge dividends not only for me, but for those I've helped during my time as a T.A. and tutor. Ten ye

My approach to tutoring is based on the belief that science is a fun and interesting subject. I always maintain a positive attitude and attempt to teach science without being boring. I have good communication skills and can work with students in a constructive, encouraging, and non-abrasive manner. As a tutor my job is to connect with my students, make the subject interesting, and relate it to their lives in some way so they are actively involved in the learning process. In my experience this is the best way to help students become successful. Throughout my educational career I have always enjoyed science classes. Due to this proficiency I was selected as a teacher's assistant for two undergraduate Biology classes. I also took 3 science based education classes. These classes were a great experience where we worked at a local high school with three exceptional science teachers. Dur

As a Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology major at Emory University, a heavy science course load was complemented with a liberal arts education. This well-rounded education equipped me with the tools to tutor students in everything from organic chemistry to proofreading papers. After graduating from school I secured a job as a kids ski instructor where I was charged with the task of educating the next generation of skiers. My extraordinary return rates indicate that I am a trustworthy and proficient teacher. I look forward to using my teaching skills and academic background to help others get the most out of their Chemistry, Biology, Math, and English courses. A good teacher is able to recognize strengths and weaknesses in his students and create an approach that utilizes the strengths to improve the weaknesses. For instance, if somebody is having trouble grasping qualitative co

During my undergraduate career, I was privileged to enroll into the Physiology department in the College of Medicine at the University of Arizona. The University of Arizona is one of 10 schools throughout the country that offer the physiology major to undergraduates. My BS degree is unique, and allowed me to continue to purse a part of medicine I have a strong passion for. I was able to complete a course in Muscle Biology, where we discussed everything from current muscle research to advancements in muscle technology. Along with my bachelor's degree, I received my personal training certification just last year. With this certification I have been able to put into practice what I have learned. Teaching has become a big passion of mine, and I have taught people of all ages. Everyone learns in a different way--some visually, others verbally. I like to incorporate both into my teach

I strongly believe in learning by doing. I have never given a lecture or taught something 1on1 without providing practice problems or peppering students with questions. The hardest part about this is getting students to understand that it is okay to ask and answer questions. Most students I have encountered are used to simply looking at the teacher but never really interacting with them. If I ask a question and nobody gets it, I rephrase it, reteach the section that led up to the question and generally try to understand why the question is not being answered. Aside from some initial amount of memorization, students need to learn how to think through concepts and ideas, and the best way to do that, regardless of subject, is ask them things. As a rising junior at Cornell University, I was asked to TA a Chemistry course for engineers. I accepted and entered into my first teaching position.

I have worked as a tutor throughout my undergraduate career and also for a part of my high school career as well (5 years in all). My tutor experience is primarily in math and chemistry, but I also have experience in other science courses (biology & physics), English and reading, and also in general study habits and study skills. I know what it takes to succeed in school, and (more importantly) I know how to help others succeed in school, too! I have tutored groups as large as 8 and also in a one-on-one context at students' homes. Please see my resume (available upon request) for additional details about my experience and qualifications. An effective tutor is one who is able to help the student identify their strengths and weakness and then work with the student to increase their understanding, thereby reinforcing their strong points and building strength on weak points. All students possess the ability to achieve academic success; however, many are unable to identify a streamlined path. I have worked with a wide range of students and have learned from each one a new teaching/learning style. One of the most important roles of an educator is to help the student identify goals and determine the most effective way to reach them. Furthermore, I believe that the role of a tutor is not to simply teach content; each session should make the student that much more independent as they learn the individualized strategies and techniques to reach academic success. As an undergraduate, I became very passionate about the sciences and graduated with a BA in Chemistry with a minor in Psychology and Biology. During my collegiate years, I Peer Tutored for General and Organic Chemistry laboratories and held review sessions for these courses. During my latter two years, I al

I have realized that the best test of whether you understand something is to be able to teach it successfully to another person. Though being prepared is not a direct part of the tutor-student interaction, it is absolutely necessary for the tutor to be prepared far beyond the basic level. My teaching style tends to rely heavily on humor and I really try to build a relationship with students that is fun for both parties. Particularly in a tutoring capacity, where interaction is one-on-one, I believe a fun working relationship between tutor and student is imporant. I also tend to be very patient in my explainations and try to creatively explain concepts in different ways to match different learning styles. I am a recent college graduate who plans to attend medical school at some point in the future. In completing my pre-medicine requirements, I successfully completed a large number of scie

I have seven years of experience sharing my passion for mathematics, science and learning with students. I taught students with a spectrum of backgrounds, from English language learners to undergraduates. Though my degree is in Biology and I began my career teaching science, I have been teaching math for the last four years. I am recognized as a highly qualified in Math and Science by Colorado's standards for non-licensed teachers. I enjoy working with students of any ability in math, chemistry, physics, and biology. I enjoy having conversations with my students, asking them questions, actively engaged in assessing how well they understand the concepts. This allows me to best serve them a learners in the present, as well as to anticipate where difficulty might arise in the future. This informal, conversational approach works magnificently for very young students, older students and colle
