Experience Summary
I have worked as a tutor throughout my undergraduate career and also for a part of my high school career as well (5 years in all). My tutor experience is primarily in math and chemistry, but I also have experience in other science courses (biology & physics), English and reading, and also in general study habits and study skills. I know what it takes to succeed in school, and (more importantly) I know how to help others succeed in school, too! I have tutored groups as large as 8 and also in a one-on-one context at students' homes. Please see my resume (available upon request) for additional details about my experience and qualifications.
Teaching Style
An effective tutor is one who is able to help the student identify their strengths and weakness and then work with the student to increase their understanding, thereby reinforcing their strong points and building strength on weak points. In order to accomplish this, I maintain a very relaxed, comfortable tutoring area so that the student feels completely comfortable discussing their academic strengths and weaknesses. With this trust established, I drive my tutor sessions with questions enabling the student to tell me what they know (or don't know) so that I'm not the one talking the whole time. It is a teacher's job to lecture; it is a tutor's job to build understanding. This understanding is developed through question answering and discussion between the student and the tutor.
