I have a collaborative style of teaching. My ultimate goal is to get students to think, regardless of their age. With younger students, I tend to be much more directive so that we accomplish intended learning. With middle and high school students, I ask "Why" and "How do you know" quite often so that they learn to provide evidence for their thinking. I do not use common classroom practices in teaching. Activity and creativity are at the heart of learning. When learning is fun, children will retain concepts and not constantly ask, "Why am I learning this?" I try to create a practical way to use concepts learned in school. Here are a few examples. For a twelve year old boy studying geometry, we might play basket ball to calculate the best angles for a free-throw. For a nine year old girl, I might teach her to do a handstand to learn about simple machines and science. Learning is fun...if you know how to play.
