Experience Summary
I have two decades of experience in education. My first 10 years were spent in adult education training adults to work in various organizations in the business world. My last 10 years have been spent in public education classrooms working as a teacher for elementary, middle, and high school students. I have taught core content courses at each level. Therefore, I understand how each grade level builds upon the teaching and learning of the previous grade level.
Teaching Style
I have a collaborative style of teaching. My ultimate goal is to get students to think, regardless of their age. With younger students, I tend to be much more directive so that we accomplish intended learning. With middle and high school students, I ask "Why" and "How do you know" quite often so that they learn to provide evidence for their thinking. Getting the RIGHT answer isn't the goal -- understanding and developing critical thinking processes are much more valuable!
My Hobbies
I enjoy reading education-related materials; I'm a nut for educational research articles (yes, I'm a complete nerd). I enjoy playing and listening to classical piano.
Other Comments
I am moderately bilingual English-Spanish. For elementary students, I can conduct tutoring sessions completely in both languages quite comfortably. For the more complex content for junior high school and up, I'm a bit less comfortable simply because of the technical language that's involved in those subject areas.
