Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.

I don't use a lesson plan or guided lessons, I let the kids lead. They usually know what they need help on and if they can figure out what they are having problems with, then everything usually starts making sense. I usually keep my laptop with me, I refer to it if there is something I can't answer or figure out how to start drawing. I don't rely on it, but usually use it as a reference tool.
I've never actually tutored someone, but I am very good at relating with younger kids and High Schoolers. I was in band from 8th grade to 12th grade where I participated in the Front Ensemble section with keyboards, vibraphones, marimbas, xylophones and various other instruments. I was in the Wind Ensemble which is the highest band class and my last year they introduced the Percussion ensemble where I was a soloist. I was also the section leader during my last year as well. I love working with children of all ages. I really like elementary age children. I have a hands-on approach to education. I want kids to get their hands into activities so that they may retain things longer. Now I do realize that not every student is hands-on. That is the responsibility of a teacher or tutor to find out what works for each student and set the envioronment for each learning experience.
I taught public school for 4 years before getting a masters degree in Religious Education with a Concentration in Childhood Education. I wanted to complement my undergraduate Elementary Education degree. Therefore, I choose the childhood education concentration at seminary. Then I was a Assoicate Pastor for Children for over 13 years where I supervised paid workers and planned activities for a children's ministry at a local church. I had to maintain a budget for this ministry ... read more

My teaching style is very comforting, fun, and yields results. I know with nurture, time, patience, resources, and love ALL children can learn. I am an advocate of allowing children to try and work independently. I feel giving a child that confidence to allow them to make mistakes and be able to correct themselves is powerful. Being an ESE teacher has allowed me to differentiate my students in learning groups that will allow them to learn from each other and to grow as great scholars. They laugh, discuss, and learn together. My teaching style is a warm, family like environment. I love what I do!

A Little Bit About Me...

Besides teaching language arts for the last four years in North Carolina, I have a lifelong interest in education, as so much was provided to me. I have tutored students from Japan, India, Puerto Rico and Mexico in vocabulary acquisition and conversational English. My background in journalism provides my strong foundation in spelling, grammar and reading comprehension. I have also completed graduate coursework in linguistics in San German, Puerto Rico, as well as a semester abroad in China, focusing on International Relations. I am eager to help children succeed in school, and feel quite capable in relating to students at their level.

A Little Bit About Me...

I greatly enjoy working with my patients and teaching them about their diagnosis. Watching them learn and listening to their challenging questions inspires me to continue my own education as an adult. I strongly believe that each child has his/her own learning style and it is your job as a teacher/tutor to tap into that style to reach that student. I focus on children's abilities and what they can accomplish with a little encouragement or guidance. My goal is to teach the student while challenging and stimulating their mind.

While living overseas in both Ukraine and Mexico I taught ESL through a non-profit organization for 4 1/2 years. In addition to teaching beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes to students of all ages, I did extensive one on one tutoring with students, and eventually conducted all new teacher training. In Ukraine I volunteered at an orphanage where I taught Bible lessons to children who suffered with mental illnesses, learning disabilities, and other consequences of severe abuse. Upon my return to Florida, I joined my church staff as a minister to middle school students, and taught regularly for 1 ½ years. Additionally I have tutored students in ESL, Spanish, Russian, and GED preparation. As a student in FSU’s rigorous Russian Program I have continued to utilize and study learning techniques, literature, and grammar. A Little Bit About Me...

My personal philosophy is to let children make their own discoveries. I am essentially a person that will guide a student to that discovery and ask questions all along the way to activate their brain in terms of problem solving. In my experience, a child will have a stronger retention of subject matter if they are allowed to discover it and understand it on their own terms. I am also a believer in bringing a child's confidence level up, as many children give up before they even start a project because of low self confidence. Simply by encouraging the child to believe in his/ her capabilities, I will increase the productivity of the session and build a relationship on trust and mutual respect.

My students begin with an understanding that it is important to express themselves in an easily comprehensible manner. I help them find their own voices by first finding out where they are and what they wish to accomplish. I then guide them to greater fluency and sophistication through self-criticism, as well as through the discovery and examination of the work of others. And I have also helped students understand that style is as much influenced by cultural context as by the desire for personal expression.

I enjoy working with children. I am a very patient person and I understand that children learn in different ways through various techniques. I feel that as a tutor I have to have a good understanding of the philosophy of education. Learning to children needs to be taught in interesting ways because a lot of children learn through interesting teachings, and or surroundings. At the end of my teaching I want the child to remember me and the techniques that I have taught them to learn and want to go throughout their life eager to learn new things. I want my students to be successful and proud of themselves.

My experience studying art, art history, and critical theory has made me an adaptable, agile instructor. I rely on my ability to approach teaching through creativity and critical thinking. If a student is struggling with one method of instruction I can quickly switch to another mode of explanation, such as, using a more visual approach. I find interacting with students and watching the learning process unfold an invigorating experience, which makes me an energetic instructor.
I have had experience teaching at the college level in art and digital foundations and teaching English to second-language learners in the k-8 range. I also have prior one-on-one tutoring experience in the k-6 range in English and math.
