Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.

I don't use a lesson plan or guided lessons, I let the kids lead. They usually know what they need help on and if they can figure out what they are having problems with, then everything usually starts making sense. I usually keep my laptop with me, I refer to it if there is something I can't answer or figure out how to start drawing. I don't rely on it, but usually use it as a reference tool.
I've never actually tutored someone, but I am very good at relating with younger kids and High Schoolers. I was in band from 8th grade to 12th grade where I participated in the Front Ensemble section with keyboards, vibraphones, marimbas, xylophones and various other instruments. I was in the Wind Ensemble which is the highest band class and my last year they introduced the Percussion ensemble where I was a soloist. I was also the section leader during my last year as well. I have taught both children and adults private piano lessons. I taught history and other subjects for 2 1/2 years as a daily and long-term substitute teacher in secondary schools. For one year I directed a public library story-time program for preschool children. I worked two years as a middle school Library Media instructor. I wrote curriculum and taught computer literacy for four years in a prison GED program. My undergraduate and graduate degrees conferred honors. I enjoy writing, and I completed a short story correspondence course with Writer's Digest. A science fiction zine published one circa 1997.
All learning starts with a question, both by teacher and student alike. My role is both as teacher (coach and guide) and student (questioner). I should employ a variety of questioning techniques to better understand strengths and weaknesses, then prescribe remedies tailored f ... read more

I love working with children of all ages. I really like elementary age children. I have a hands-on approach to education. I want kids to get their hands into activities so that they may retain things longer. Now I do realize that not every student is hands-on. That is the responsibility of a teacher or tutor to find out what works for each student and set the envioronment for each learning experience.
I taught public school for 4 years before getting a masters degree in Religious Education with a Concentration in Childhood Education. I wanted to complement my undergraduate Elementary Education degree. Therefore, I choose the childhood education concentration at seminary. Then I was a Assoicate Pastor for Children for over 13 years where I supervised paid workers and planned activities for a children's ministry at a local church. I had to maintain a budget for this ministry ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

A graduate of Florida State University, I initially started out teaching children and their parents about good eating habits at the Health Dept. I wanted to partake in the school system, so I began teaching as a Title 1 teacher. I was teaching small groups of individuals that needed some extra encouragement to thrive in the general education class. I loved teaching so much that it inspired me to become a Certified ESE teacher. Since my certification, I have enjoyed teaching students in Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Skills. It has been a great reward tutoring and teaching students that thought they never had a chance to succeed!
My teaching style is very comforting, fun, and yields results. I know with nurture, time, patience, resources, and love ALL children can learn. I am an advocate of allowing children to try and work independently. I feel giving a ch ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style has foundations in the Socratic seminar, where class discussions lead students to form their own understanding of the materials/subjects at hand. As students only retain 5% of what is spoken in lectures, I encourage students to follow a model of inquiry and responsibility for their own work. I support studying and reading at home in order to excel on tests, and offer individual assistance to each student. I also insist that parents take a strong leadership role in the education of their children, so that they may develop a yearning for information and knowledge. Lastly, I use the daily newspaper as reading material as well as topics for discussion and vocabulary acquisition. My goal is to help students become critical thinkers who take responsibility for their education.
Besides teaching language arts for the last four years in North Carolina, I have a lifelong i ... read more

While living overseas in both Ukraine and Mexico I taught ESL through a non-profit organization for 4 1/2 years. In addition to teaching beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes to students of all ages, I did extensive one on one tutoring with students, and eventually conducted all new teacher training. In Ukraine I volunteered at an orphanage where I taught Bible lessons to children who suffered with mental illnesses, learning disabilities, and other consequences of severe abuse. Upon my return to Florida, I joined my church staff as a minister to middle school students, and taught regularly for 1 ½ years. Additionally I have tutored students in ESL, Spanish, Russian, and GED preparation. As a student in FSU’s rigorous Russian Program I have continued to utilize and study learning techniques, literature, and grammar. Finally, other coursework has exposed me to a variety of di ... read more

My experience with Porter’s Daycare & Educational Center and several other organizations has afforded me the opportunity to become familiar with the many challenges, responsibilities and positive experiences while working with youth. My past experiences include numerous years of working with youth of various ages. As graduating with a degree in the Psychology field I have come to understand children better. I understand that all children can learn, but there are different techniques in teaching that a teacher may have to use from child to child. Being a tutor you get to understand each child and work with them one on one and understand that specific child's learning ability. I have taught children for nine years and I am aware that children learn through a positive energetic person that makes learning fun. I have learned a lot going to a academically challenging college. I have learned grammatical skills, math skills, communication skills, etc. During the last nine years I have tutored children in all of those areas.
I enjoy working with children. I am a very patient person and I understand that children learn in different ways through various techniques. I feel that as a tutor I have to ... read more

I graduated from Duke University with a Ph.D. in music in 1997. Since then, I have taught and advised students at a number of colleges and universities in North Carolina and Michigan. I have created or helped to create curricula (both music and English composition) and have implemented it in the classroom. I have also assisted students in charting out their courses of study, having worked with all levels of students from freshman and sophomores through doctoral candidates. I have a keen interest in education and have spent the majority of my adult life involved with higher learning, either as a student or professor. My education, teaching and composing careers demonstrate that I am quite effective at setting, planning and achieving both long- and short-range goals and in my attention to detail

I believe that all children are special and have unique learning needs. There is nothing better than watching a child have an "ah-ha!" moment. Sometimes a child (or an adult!) needs a little help to make that connection though. I enjoy the challenge of finding what works for each child. I am a creative individual and take the time to research and experiment with different teaching methods. I believe in positive reinforcement and in putting the student in a position to succeed. In my experience, teaching has been a privilege and a joy!
As a newlywed and young mother, I decided to pursue an education degree at the University of Florida. I maintained a 3.85 grade point average. A Little Bit About Me...

I am a very hands on and visual teacher that believes the best way to learn is by seeing and doing things yourself. In order to provide the best teaching expereince I would teach through multiple examples and putting difficult subject matter into a context the student can understand and visualize. I believe in working with each student to develop a system that works best for the individual, which will give them the tool to learn more easily in the future.

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching is a rewarding and humbling experience. One of the most beneficial things for me as an artist is the time I spend researching books for my students. I find that the interacting with art books and magazines is far more engaging for the students than slides. Using a variety of critiquing methods seems to keep the level of energy and interest high. I enjoy using a “silent” critique, where students write each other candid and anonymous messages. I try to give projects that encourage personal investigation. My personal “Monster” project requires that the student write a narrative about a monster based on a personal fear. Then they create a 3-D artwork of the monster in its setting. I evaluate the students based on sensitivity, creativity, and thoughtfulness. After I get to be familiar with a student’s work I look for improvement, risk-taking, developing concepts and trying new t ... read more

After I complete my degree I hope to go on to graduate school and law school. Where I intend to focus my research and efforts in the field of civil and social advocacy. I believe that the only way to a better future for humanity is education.
